Mock brackets: Where do Big Ten teams land?

It’s that time of the week, time to look at the mock brackets. And the Big Ten remains well-represented with seven teams in each of the mock brackets that I check each week. The only conference with more bids is the Big East, which has eight or nine tourney teams—depending on the bracket you check. Jerry Palm of Michigan a No. 1 in the Midwest playing North Carolina Central. Indiana a No. 2 in the Midwest playing Montana. Michigan State a No. 3 in the East playing Stony Brook. Ohio State a No. 4 in the South playing Louisiana

Collision course: Ranking this week's big games

This week is all about No. 1 Michigan’s trip to No. 3 Indiana on Saturday night. The winner will be in the driver’s seat in the Big Ten race—and solidify its case as a national championship contender. But before that, the Hoosiers have a testy game at Purdue on Wednesday (8:30 p.m. on BTN/BTN2Go). Beware, Indiana! And Wisconsin also plays two big games that will determine if the Badgers can get back into the Big Ten chase with visits to Ohio State (tonight) and Illinois (Sunday). Speaking of the Fighting Illini, they also have a monster week with that visit

Today's links: On challenges, polls & ticking clocks

It’s no secret. In fact, it’s well-known to anyone who watches Big Ten hoops: Ohio State’s sophomores need to step up if the Buckeyes want to have a big season. Let’s begin daily links right there, since Ohio State has a big home game tonight vs. Wisconsin. I’m looking at you, Sam Thompson, Shannon Scott, Amir Williams and LaQuinton Ross. The visit from the always-rugged-on-defense Badgers will be a nice test for that quintet (read Wisconsin Ohio State game preview here). Time to give Deshaun Thomas some consistent scoring help. Wisconsin sophomore Traevon Jackson is driven by high expectations. Hey, that’s usually

Power Rankings: Minnesota continues to drop

Just a couple weeks ago, Minnesota was 15-1 and in the top 10 of the national polls. Fast forward to today, and the Gophers have lost four straight – a funk that keeps them dropping in my Power Rankings. Where does your team land on my latest list? Find out in this post. Oh, and feel free to send me your thoughts, either in the comment box at the bottom of the post or on Twitter (@BTNBrentYarina). Payne, Dawson dunk back-to-back in 3.7 seconds

NBA Hall of Famer Reggie Miller once scored eight points in 11 seconds. The Spartans had a quick – albeit less memorable – outburst of their own in Sunday’s defeat at Indiana. In a span of 3.7 seconds, Adreian Payne slammed home Travis Trice‘s miss and Branden Dawson, after stealing the ensuing inbound pass, dunked again. Yes, that’s two dunks in less than four seconds. Some teams don’t get two dunks in an entire game! Watch the sequence now. [ RELATED: Looking for a particular jam? Find it in our Big Ten Dunk Archive ] It was an exciting moment,

Whiteboard: Purdue + Michigan = big week for IU

This is a nice week that is anchored by a Titanic prime-time clash on Saturday: No. 1 Michigan at No. 3 Indiana, which began the season No. 1. This should be a battle of first-place teams, with the winner in the driver’s seat to win the Big Ten. There are some other tantalizing matchups, including Wisconsin at No. 11 Ohio State, Indiana at Purdue, Iowa at No. 23 Minnesota, Illinois at No. 13 Michigan State and Wisconsin at Illinois. There is nothing better than a Purdue-Indiana hoop game in late January to heat up your house. You just know the

Video: Dion Sims 'Football Report' interview

On Monday night’s “Big Ten Football Report,” BTN analyst Gerry DiNardo broke down film with Indiana offensive coordinator Seth Littrell and talked about how Big Ten coaches handle the days leading up to National Signing Day. Also, host Mike Hall interviewed Michigan State tight end Dion Sims about his decision to leave early for the 2013 NFL Draft. Watch our interview with Sims right here.

Dienhart: Ranking the top Big Ten teams of BCS era

Got a case of the “football blues” with basketball season in full-tilt mode? If so, than chew on this piece from Athlon Sports that picks the 12 best Big Ten teams of the BCS era. Or, if you prefer, the 12 best Big Ten teams since 1998. As you would suspect, Ohio State is well-represented with half of the countdown being Buckeye squads: 2002 (No. 1); 1998 (No. 2); 2006 (No. 4); 2012 (No. 5); 2007 (No. 7); 2010 (No. 12). Hard to argue that. The 2002 squad won the national title, while the 2006 and 2007 teams played for national

Today's links: Michigan keeps drawing praise

Let’s begin daily links with a homage to Michigan. I think it’s the best team in America, at least this week. And count the great Loren Tate of the Champaign News-Gazette among those who also are impressed with Michigan, which quelled any notion Illinois had of upsetting the Wolverines with impressive penetration and passing on Sunday en route to improving to 19-1 with a win over the Fighting Illini. But Michigan’s next three road games will be killer: Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan State. If the Wolverines survive that gauntlet, I’ll really be impressed. And so should you. *** Paging Rodney Williams,
