BTN LiveBIG: On Wisconsin's community outreach

BTN’s new series “BTN LiveBIG” continues Tuesday following the Nebraska at Wisconsin men’s basketball game, with stories about a student-run program that for more than 20 years has provided free health care to patients in need and a local neighborhood book exchange program  that has gone global. The episode will air at midnight ET on Tuesday. Viewers will get a look at MEDiC, a program run by students of the Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and by professional volunteers from various healthcare backgrounds. Seven MEDiC clinics provide access, resources and care to low-income patients who may not be

Jasmine McGhee

Did You See This? McGhee's buzzer-beater

There are buzzer-beaters, and then there are the kind Indiana’s Jasmine McGhee hit Wednesday night. Any time a player beats the buzzer, especially the final buzzer, it’s exciting. It’s all the more exciting, though, when it comes on a shot that lifts a struggling team past its fiercest rival, which just so happens to be ranked. Prediction: McGhee is still flying high following this game-winner to drop No. 22 Purdue. [ RELATED: Catch up on all of Wednesday’s Big Ten women’s action ] McGhee’s buzzer-beater was only one of her many highlights on the night. She scored a game-high 26

Jared Berggren

No. 17 Wisconsin stifles Northwestern, 69-41

Jared Berggren and Ben Brust each scored 12 points, and No. 19 Wisconsin shut down Northwestern 69-41 on Wednesday night for its fifth win in six games. The balanced Badgers (19-8, 10-4 Big Ten) had five players with at least eight points and held the Wildcats to 29-percent shooting during a very businesslike performance. Brust, who missed the last two days of practice with a sore left knee, and Berggren also had eight rebounds apiece as Wisconsin enjoyed a 47-22 edge on the boards. Reggie Hearn scored 13 for Northwestern (13-14, 4-10), which has dropped four in a row and

LaQuinton Ross

No. 18 Ohio State blows out Minnesota, 71-45

Deshaun Thomas overcame a slow start to score 19 points and No. 18 Ohio State used a 16-0 second-half run to beat Minnesota 71-45 on Wednesday night. Shannon Scott added 11 points and LaQuinton Ross 10 for the Buckeyes, who have won the last six meetings with the Golden Gophers overall and the last six in Columbus. The teams came into the night in dire need of a Big Ten win. Both had lost three of their last four, and each was humiliated on the road on Sunday. The Golden Gophers (18-9, 6-8 Big Ten) were pounded at Iowa, 72-51,

BTN2Go to air Iowa-Nebraska game on Saturday

Saturday afternoon’s Iowa-Nebraska game, originally scheduled for Thursday but postponed due to an impending winter storm, will air at 2 p.m. ET on BTN2Go, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday. The game was originally set to be televised by ESPN2, but when the game was rescheduled, ESPN informed the conference office that due to other programming commitments and logistical issues it would not be able to televise the game. The conference office then asked if BTN could come up with a solution so that fans would be able to see the game.  As a service to Iowa and Nebraska fans,

Jerry Lucas

Video: Watch Jerry Lucas receive NCAA tourney honor

During a timeout in the first half of Ohio State’s win over Minnesota on Wednesday, Ohio State legend and Big Ten Icon (No. 8) Jerry Lucas was recognized on the court. Lucas, a three-time All-American, three-time Big Ten Most Valuable Player, two-time National Player of the Year and two-time Final Four MVP, received his NCAA Tournament Top 75 Player trophy. Watch the ceremony here. In a cool scene, former Ohio State star and current BTN analyst Jim Jackson presented Lucas with the hardware. Not a bad duo in the least bit. Numbers don't leave much room for debate that Lucas

Women's roundup: Indiana nips Purdue on buzzer-beater

Jasmine McGhee hit a buzzer-beater to help Indiana upset in-state rival and No. 22 Purdue, 62-61, on Wednesday night at Assembly Hall. The game-winning shot accounted for just two of McGhee’s game-high 26 points. The Hoosier was an impressive 11-of-17 from the field in the upset. In other action No. 7 Penn State routed Illinois and Michigan State dropped Northwestern. Watch Indiana’s game-winning shot here. Debate It: Is Burke or Oladipo Big Ten POY?

As we near the stretch run of the Big Ten schedule, there are plenty of races to keep an eye on. The most intriguing one, other than the Big Ten title race, is the battle for Big Ten Player of the Year. Will it be the season-long frontrunner Trey Burke? Or the quickly surging Victor Oladipo? BTN.com’s Tom Dienhart and Brent Yarina debate the topic in this post. Today's links: What does Hoosiers' big win mean?

No edition of daily links on this morning could start anywhere but with last night’s big Indiana 72-68 win at Michigan State. The victory ended a miserable 17-game losing skid for the No. 1 Hoosiers at Michigan State. But, more importantly, it put Indiana alone in first place in the Big Ten and in firm control of its destiny. In fact, it will take a big flop by the Hoosiers for them not to win the Big Ten for the first time since 2002 back when IU lost the national title game to Maryland. Games remain at Minnesota; vs. Iowa;

Did You See This? Oladipo gets fancy & dunks

It’s a move players think of doing quite a bit, but it’s one they rarely attempt in a game situation. Unless your name is Victor Oladipo, apparently. In Tuesday’s 72-68 victory at No. 5 Michigan State, the exciting junior threw the inbound pass off Matt Costello’s backside, and it worked to perfection. In typical Oladipo fashion, he turned the inbound pass into a quick, powerful slam. Watch the play here. Here are some tweets about Oladipo’s inbound play: How brilliant is Victor Oladipo?! #Hoosiers — Tom Dienhart (@BTNTomDienhart) February 20, 2013 Loved the Oladipo dunk off the inbounds-off-the-back.
