Big Ten links: Could IU's Oladipo go No. 1 overall?

Self-important, fast-talking, arm-waving weather people who predicted a massive Midwest snow storm yesterday called “Winter Storm Q”? Over-hyped. Indiana hoops? Not over-hyped. That’s why the Hoosiers get the lead in my daily links. Michigan guard Trey Burke agrees with me on the formidable Hoosiers. In fact, he says Indiana is the best team the Wolverines have played this season, and another expert says Victor Oladipo’s NBA stock is rising. I think most every team that played Indiana would say that, right? Frankly, I wonder how Indiana has lost any games this season. The losses: In overtime to Butler on a

Super Seven: And my top Big Ten seniors are ...

Seniors in college basketball—good seniors–often times are a rare breed. If a player is really good, he’ll often leave early for the pros before his senior season. Still, a senior is a senior, and most any coach would love to have the experience and savvy they bring to a roster. That know-how is invaluable to any team during its pursuit of a league title and March Madness run. And the Big Ten is loaded with many good seniors in 2012-13. In fact, many top ones didn’t make this list, including Indiana’s Jordan Hulls, Minnesota’s Rodney Williams, Purdue’s D.J. Byrd and

Illinois drops Penn State for fifth straight win

D.J. Richardson started slow Thursday but finished with 18 points and hit a pair of key free throws late in Illinois’ ugly 64-59 win over Penn State. The win was the fifth straight for Illinois (20-8, 7-7 Big Ten). But facing a team that hadn’t won since late December, it didn’t come easy. Jermaine Marshall’s 3-pointer brought Penn State within 62-59 with 5 seconds left. Richardson then sank a pair of free throws that sealed the win. Nebraska women's baketball

Thursday's women's hoops roundup

Minnesota edged Ohio State 57-56 (full box score here) as the Gophers Rachel Banham came up big in the end. Watch a full feature on Banham in this post. Also tonight. No. 24 Nebraska beat Michigan 57-39. We’ll update this post with available highlights later tonight. For now, did you see this buzzer-beater from Wednesday? Banham nailed a jumper with 0.02 seconds to play to lift the Minnesota (16-11, 5-8) over Ohio State (14-12, 4-9) in Columbus, Ohio. Back-to-back three-pointers from the Buckeyes’ Raven Ferguson in the final 18 seconds of play gave Ohio State a one-point lead with 13

'Journey' features IU's Creek, big dunkers, & Magic

This week on “The Journey 2013” presented by Chase Freedom our crew spotlights Indiana’s Maurice Creek and trace his path back from multiple major injuries into the Hoosier rotation. We also look at Ohio State’s Sam Thompson and Minnesota’s Rodney Williams, two of the best dunkers in the Big Ten. We’ll also highlight the connection Michigan State great Earvin “Magic” Johnson has to his alma mater as the Big Ten legend returned to East Lansing for the Indiana-Michigan State game. The next episode of “The Journey 2013” airs at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday following the Northwestern-Purdue game on BTN/BTN2Go. Today's links: Hunker down with hoops headlines

Please forgive me for any errors in daily links as I fret about the impending doom and havoc an on-coming snow/ice storm surely will bring to the Midlands. Time to race to my local Piggly Wiggly for eggs, bread and milk because, well, that’s what people do in times like this—make French toast, and worry. Deep breath. OK. After a horrid 22-point loss at Wisconsin on Sunday that was termed by some as “embarrassing,” Ohio State rebounded to embarrass a sinking Minnesota squad by 26, 71-45. Buckeye legend Jerry Lucas was on hand to be honored as one of the 75

D.J. Richardson

Big Ten Q&A: Illini's Richardson eyes tourney run

Since slumping to 2-7 in the Big Ten, Illinois has ripped off four wins in a row to greatly enhance its NCAA profile. And, it’s an impressive profile, with wins over the likes of Gonzaga, Butler, Ohio State and Indiana. D.J. Richardson has played a big role in the Fighting Illini’s surge. Since exploding for 30 points in a win at Nebraska on Jan. 22, Richardson has been on a roll en route to scoring in double-digits in all seven games since to help Illinois improve to 19-8 overall and 6-7 in the league. The Illini have needed the production
