Dienhart: Big Ten Sweet 16 previews

The dust has cleared and only 16 teams are standing in the NCAA tourney—four of them are Big Ten schools. The league more than acquitted itself in the opening three rounds of the Big Dance, forging a 10-3 mark from the seven teams that competed. No. 5 Wisconsin was the only Big Ten team that failed to win a game, falling to Ole Miss. No. 11 Minnesota (UCLA) and No. 7 Illinois (Colorado) each won a game before falling to Florida and Miami (Fla.), respectively, in the third round. No. 1 Indiana, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Michigan State

Today's links: Tracking opinions of Gophers' move

The firing of Minnesota coach Tubby Smith resonated across Big Ten country and the nation, and most of the reaction was negative. So, I have to start daily links right there—even with postseason basketball in full churn. Legendary columnist Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says the Gophers haven’t had much success hiring big-time coaches. He’s correct, but why stop trying? And am I the only one in the galaxy who knows Smith was 46-62 in Big Ten games at Minnesota? The Minneapolis Star Tribune wrote an editorial that basically said Tubby had his chance. Amen. Asking fellow coaches how they

How should Wisconsin handle QB situation?

In Monday’s web-only “Football Report” segment, BTN analysts Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith offered their thoughts on how Wisconsin should handle its quarterback situation. The Badgers, of course, return all three signal-callers who saw time under center last season – Danny O’Brien. Curt Phillips and Joel Stave – in addition to redshirt freshman Bart Houston. Hear our analysts’ suggestions in this video. And check out last month’s “Football Report” interview with Gary Andersen:

Video: Tom Izzo reacts to Tubby Smith's firing

During his Monday morning press conference with reporters, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo was asked about Minnesota’s decision today to fire Tubby Smith as the Golden Gophers head basketball coach. Watch Izzo’s reaction and answer in this video clip. The Michigan State coach takes a sip of water and then takes a long pause before answering. “Tubby’s a good friend of mine,” Izzo said. “So that does hit me a little bit harder.” [ RELATED: Embed BTN video on your site | Twitter reaction | Dienhart: ‘It’s Shaka Smart or bust’ ] Izzo was a vocal defender of Bruce Weber around this time last year when Illinois

Tubby Smith

Dienhart: 'It's Shaka Smart or bust'

Tubby Smith did many good things while head coach at Minnesota. He won some big games, advanced the program to three NCAA tourneys and two NITs in six years on the job. But, the school decided today that all of that wasn’t enough. Smith was fired. Now what for the Golden Gophers, who join Northwestern as Big Ten schools in search of a coach? Many feel Smith wasn’t given enough time, that he was often in a tough spot because of injuries, poor facilities or defections. Call them excuses or true hurdles to progress—it doesn’t matter. Twitter: Reaction to Tubby Smith's firing

Tubby Smith is out at Minnesota. The coach was fired Monday, one day after the Gophers were knocked out of the NCAA tourney. Smith, 61, spent six seasons in Minneapolis, tallying a 124-81 overall mark (.605), including 46-62 (.426) in the Big Ten. The Gophers made three NCAA tourney appearances under Smith, however they only went 1-3. See the Twitter reaction to Smith’s firing in this post.
