The Big Ten office released its latest Big Ten Men’s Basketball Players of the Week on Monday, and three players were honored. Northwestern’s Drew Crawford and Penn State’s D.J. Newbill shared Player of the Week, while Indiana’s Noah Vonleh claimed Freshman of the Week. Read more in this post.
Want to talk about an efficient day? Indiana point guard Yogi Ferrell had one of the more efficient performances you’ll ever see in Sunday afternoon’s 63-52 victory over No. 14 Michigan. Ferrell scored 27 points on just 10 shots, thanks in large part to a career-high seven 3-pointers. The star sophomore finished 7-of-8 from distance and 8-of-10 overall, plus he hit four free throws. Super Bowl Sunday featured a quartet of Big Ten women’s basketball games. Two of the games included ranked foes, as Michigan State upset No. 19 Purdue, 89-73, and No. 12 Penn State topped Northwestern, 79-75. It is no secret that Tom Izzo’s Michigan State team has battled through plenty of injuries this season. MSU senior point guard Keith Appling is one of those players, who is playing through a wrist injury, which he suffered in early December and re-aggravated against Indiana on Jan.21.
Both of the Big Ten’s early Saturday games came down to the wire and were won by the visitor by one point following last-second misses from the home team. In the first game, Sam Dekker missed a would-be game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer in No. 13 Wisconsin’s loss vs. No. 23 Ohio State.
