Michigan Wolverines tight end Devin Funchess

Twitter: 2013 Big Ten football breakout players?

The topic of breakout players can be an ambiguous one. For example, some people view Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah as a 2013 breakout player. Others, meanwhile, feel that with 1,315 total yards and 10 scores a season ago, he’s well past “breakout” territory. I tend to side with the latter. Either way, I went to Twitter and asked Big Ten fans for their 2013 breakout candidates. Before we move on to the fans’ picks, here are my top candidates: Devin Funchess and Melvin Gordon on offense and Adolphus Washington and Shilique Calhoun on defense. To be fair, my offensive picks had

Dienhart, on Badgers: 'This is still Wisconsin'

MADISON, Wis. – No doubt about it, Gary Andersen will possess plenty of talent in his first season at Wisconsin. In fact, ex-coach Bret Bielema often pointed toward 2013 as being a potentially big season for a program that has gone to the last three Rose Bowls. On Thursday, the defense had a big edge on the offense, as camp legs appear to be setting in. [ PROGRAM ALERT: Watch the Wisconsin Preview Show at 8 p.m. ET Aug. 22 on BTN/BTN2Go ] The quarterback race is essentially down to Curt Phillips and Joel Stave, but JC transfer Tanner McEvoy

Ameer Abdullah

B1G Player Rankings: No. 14, Ameer Abdullah

We’re 14 days from the 2013 football season kicking off. Indiana (Indiana State) and Minnesota (UNLV) get things started for the Big Ten on Thursday, Aug. 29 on BTN/BTN2Go. To help count down the days to kickoff, BTN.com is ranking the top 25 players. Join us as we count it down, from 25-1, every day. No. 14: Ameer Abdullah, RB, Nebraska When Rex Burkhead got hurt last year, Abdullah stepped in and the offense didn’t miss a beat as the 5-9, 190-pounder became a workhorse. Now, Abdullah is poised to lead one of the nation’s top running attacks in 2013.

Dienhart: Talent is there at Illinois, but it's young

RANTOUL, Ill. – Tim Beckman is hoping for better results in Year Two after a 2-10 debut in Champaign that saw Illinois push its Big Ten losing skid to 14 games. This is a team whose best talent is young, so patience must be preached as growing pains are likely. Beckman made nice adjustments on his staff in the offseason, bringing in ex-Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit to run the offense. [ PROGRAM ALERT: Watch the Illinois Preview Show at 8 p.m. ET on Aug. 21 on BTN/BTN2Go ] Cubit is a sage mind who has changed things. Defensive coordinator Tim

Dienhart: Plenty to like about talented Wildcats

KENOSHA, Wis. – Much anticipation surrounds Northwestern. In fact, there was no school I was more looking forward to watching in camp than the Wildcats, who are coming off a 10-win season and the program’s first bowl victory since the 1948 season. Today, Camp Kenosha felt a little like mid-October during one of the more spirited stops on our tour. [ PROGRAM ALERT: Watch the Northwestern Preview Show at 8 ET Aug. 20 on BTN/BTN2Go ] Let’s start with the offensive line, which is still coming together. Without a doubt, center Brandon Vitabile is the anchor. He looked good. You can
