Tom Izzo

Izzo, Beilein top list of top 25 X's and O's coaches

It is no secret to Big Ten fans that Michigan and Michigan State have restored one of the top in-state rivalries throughout college basketball over the past couple of seasons. But what is it that makes both of these programs so successful? According to’s Jeff Goodman, it is all about coaching. Goodman recently put together a list of the top 25 X’s and O’s coaches in America, and Tom Izzo topped the list, followed immediately by Michigan’s John Beilein at No. 2. Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan and Indiana’s Tom Crean came in at No. 13 and 14, respectively. The list

Iowa's Kirk Ferentz

Dienhart: My most important Week 1 Big Ten games

Not all season-opening games are created equally. Some are more difficult and critical than others. Yes, you never want to put too much stock into one game. Still, the first game of the season is bigger and more important for some teams than it is for others. With the season fast approaching, here is my look at the seven most fascinating season openers. 1. Northern Illinois at Iowa. The Hawkeyes’ struggles are well-documented. Iowa has gone from 11 wins in 2009 to eight, to seven to four. You don’t need to have a degree in statistics to see the trend

B1G Player Rankings: No. 8, Devin Gardner

We’re eight days from the 2013 football season kicking off. Indiana (Indiana State) and Minnesota (UNLV) get things started for the Big Ten on Thursday, Aug. 29 on BTN/BTN2Go. To help count down the days to kickoff, is ranking the top 25 players. Join us as we count it down, from 25-1, every day. No. 8: Devin Gardner, QB, Michigan The only thing keeping Devin Gardner from landing higher on this list is his small sample size. All things considered, Gardner dazzled in his five-start cameo in relief of Denard Robinson late last season. The quarterback-turned-receiver-turned-quarterback amassed 1,320 total

Kirk Ferentz

Dienhart: Myriad questions loom for Hawkeyes

As Kirk Ferentz enters his 15th season in Iowa City, he finds himself looking to get his program back on track. The Hawkeyes’ win total has gone from 11 to 8 to 7 to 4 last season. Myriad questions loom for Iowa as it winds down training camp, as the halcyon days of the early-2000s fade further into the rear-view mirror. But Ferentz and Co., often do their best work when expectations are low. SI's Mandel predicts Michigan vs. Ohio State B1G title game

If you want to see Ohio State and Michigan play on back-to-back weeks, you’ll like Stewart Mandel’s 2013 Big Ten football preview. Mandel, who released his preview Tuesday, picks Ohio State to beat Michigan in the Big Ten title game, one week after losing at Michigan. [ Ohio State, Michigan lead 2013 Big Ten conference preview ] While Mandel doesn’t have the Buckeyes going unblemished – as many other experts predict – he’s still very high on Urban Meyer’s team. After all, he predicts Braxton Miller (Offensive MVP), Ryan Shazier (Defensive MVP) and Dontre Wilson (Impact Freshman) to take

Chris Borland

B1G Player Rankings: No. 9, Chris Borland

Nebraska Practice

Dienhart: Huskers have one of 'best-looking' fronts

LINCOLN, Neb. – It’s difficult to believe that this is Bo Pelini’s sixth season in Lincoln. Time flies. He has done many good things, highlighted by last year’s trip to the Big Ten title game. But to get over the hump and to the program’s first league title since 1999, the defense needs to improve. [ PROGRAM ALERT: Watch the Nebraska Preview Show at 8 p.m. ET Saturday on BTN/BTN2Go ] And in Monday’s practice, the players looked good. Especially the d-linemen. Now, to be fair, today’s practice wasn’t overly physical. The latter part of the drills were devoted to
