Big Ten coaches critique proposed rule change

The college football world is abuzz with the recent NCAA Football Rules Committee proposal to recommend a change that will allow defensive units to substitute within the first 10 seconds of the 40-second play clock, with the exception of the final two minutes of each half, starting with the 2014 season. Some think the rule is horrible, that it is intended to slow down these exciting spread/no-huddle offenses that work at a fast pace. Schools like Oregon and Texas A&M are among the best at running such offenses. In the Big Ten, Kevin Wilson has made Indiana competitive with a

Review & preview: Big Ten stocks rise & fall

It’s Friday, which means it’s time for Three-Pointers, a chance to take the temperature of the Big Ten in several different areas. It’s a good time to be John Beilein and Michigan. Weekend schedules are here with TV info, latest men’s basketball standings are over here and the season’s top plays can be seen right here. THREE STOCKS TO BUY 1. Michigan. Catch up with these 10 Big Ten Friday headlines

Something strange happened last night: There was no chaos in the Big Ten. No upsets. No unranked teams winning on the road vs. ranked teams. And, as you know, that’s not normal. So, instead of zaniness, we got a dose of predictable outcomes: Michigan State whipped Northwestern in East Lansing, and Wisconsin took care of business in the Kohl Center vs. Minnesota. Ho-hum. In MSU’s triumph, Adreian Payne continues to show no ill effects from being out for an extended stretch with a foot injury. In fact, the big fella looked to be in midseason form vs. NU with 20

Big Ten Fans – Show Off Your School Colors

Registration opened Wednesday for the third-annual BTN Big 10K. It is one of the most exciting races in the city that brings together Big Ten fans, alumni and current students. The event is a celebration of the Big Ten community, as well as the upcoming Big Ten football season. Last year, a record-breaking 13,000 runners participated from 43 states and five different countries, including the UK, Spain, Canada, Ireland and the Netherlands. It is safe to say we can now call the race a “global” event. The day’s excitement also included a marriage proposal on stage at the tailgate party.

Dienhart: What Gophers need for an NCAA bid

Most of us can agree with the notion that five Big Ten schools appear headed for the NCAA tourney: Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Ohio State and Wisconsin. And there is one school that’s seemingly on the fringe: Minnesota. The Golden Gophers can spruce up their resume with a win tonight at Wisconsin. And, let’s be honest: Minnesota’s resume needs some polishing. Richard Pitino’s club is 16-8 overall and 5-6 in the Big Ten, tied with Nebraska and Northwestern while staring up at the aforementioned five schools. But as of right now, Minnesota isn’t playing its best ball. The Gophers are

Throwback Thursday Q&A: Spartans' Morris Peterson

When it comes to college and pro success among recent Big Ten basketball players, it doesn’t get much better than Morris Peterson. Not only did the ex-Michigan State star claim Big Ten Player of the Year and All-America honors en route to the Spartans’ 2000 NCAA title, the Big Ten’s last crown, he enjoyed a successful 11-year NBA career. His playing day behind him, Peterson runs his own clothing company, World Artist Refuge, and manages an entertainment artist touring company, World Artist Transport. He also does philanthropic work in Flint, Mich., and New Orleans, and is in the process of

Indiana’s strange and bizarre season took another unexpected and maddening turn last night with a home loss to last-place Penn State. How can this IU team beat top-10 squads like Wisconsin and Michigan in Bloomington, and then lose to the likes of the Nittany Lions and Northwestern at home? It’s safe to say, panic has set in for Indiana. This team just can’t shoot. And the turnover issues persist. The Hoosiers led by seven with two minutes to play. And they failed to score a basket in the final 5:16. It didn’t help that IU turned the ball over three
