Since I’m about to flip my “People of Wal-Mart” calendar from January to February, I thought it was time to begin to examine NCAA tournament resumes for Big Ten teams. Let’s take a look at Ohio State’s vitals. Take note that my numbers cited are from the start of the week and come from www.realtimerpi.com.

What a crazy, loony night in the Big Ten. First, last-place Penn State waltzed into No. 24 Ohio State and won. If that wasn’t zany enough, Northwestern cruised into No. 17 Wisconsin and shocked the world with a triumph. The more I learn about this Big Ten race, the less I seemingly know. Confused? You betcha.
What was Bo Ryan’s reaction to Northwestern draining 6-of-10 3-pointers in the second half of Wisconsin’s 65-56 loss Wednesday night at the Kohl Center? Stunned would suffice. Ryan simply couldn’t believe that the Big Ten’s worst 3-point shooting team got so hot from distance, and he was especially shocked that big man Alex Olah, who entered the night 2-of-13 from 3, hit a trey. Watch Ryan’s reaction in this post.

Prediction: D.J. Newbill won’t soon forgot his performance in Wednesday night’s win at No. 23 Ohio State. Not only did Newbill score a game-high 25 points, but he hit the game-winner with 1.9 seconds left in overtime to help the Nittany Lions snap their 18-game losing streak to the Buckeyes. Even better: Newbill beat all-world defender Aaron Craft on the final dagger. Watch the shot in this post.

Our Super Wednesday doubleheader was a wild one, filled with two huge Big Ten upsets. Penn State kicked off the action with a memorable 71-70 win over No. 23 Ohio State in overtime. Northwestern followed with another huge upset, a 65-56 victory over No. 14 Wisconsin.

The arrival of the Super Bowl means many things to many people. Ro-tel and Velveeta dip … the end of the most wonderful time of the year … spring is approaching. For me, it means we basically are at the halfway point of the Big Ten hoop season.
