B1G Wrestling Championships preview: 157 pounds

We decided to have a little fun providing a preview to this year’s B1G Wrestling Championships on March 8-9 at Wisconsin. BTN wrestling analyst Jim Gibbons, an NCAA champion both as a wrestler and coach at Iowa State, will break down one weight class a day, and pick a winner, each day through March 7. Today, it’s the 157-pound weight class. Along with the breakdown and pick, I’m including my Mr. Upside. These are guys whose arrow is pointed in the right direction and have the stuff to perform better than their seed. The kind of guys who every coach on

Read Wednesday's 10 Big Ten headlines

Nebraska begins a final push for its first NCAA bid since 1998 tonight with a visit to Indiana. Not bad for a team picked to finish last in the Big Ten. Can the Cornhuskers close the deal? It will be difficult, as a visit from Wisconsin follows this game. “We’re good enough to be a tournament team,” Tim Miles told reporters. “We just need to win enough games to prove it.” The Huskers are 8-2 in their last 10 games, bringing some mojo to Bloomington. Indiana also has NCAA hopes—and brings some momentum into the game, having won three of

Big Ten Geeks: Michigan stands alone

Michigan won the Big Ten title outright last night on the strength of a shockingly easy win at Illinois. Sure, the Illini don’t have an impressive record, but John Groce’s team came into the matchup on a three-game winning streak, during which no opponent broke 0.9 points per trip. This was a hot team whose defense was absolutely stifling conference opponents. Talk had even begun of this Illinois team somehow sneaking back onto the bubble in the season’s final week. The Wolverines obviously didn’t get the memo. Michigan had an historic night from three, knocking down 16 of 23 from

Dienhart: Purdue has plenty of questions this spring

There is just no sugarcoating it: Darrell Hazell’s debut was brutal. How brutal? The 1-11 season arguably was the worst in Purdue history. And the one win came vs. a FCS foe that went—you guessed it—1-11. There was very little that this team did well last season during a winless Big Ten campaign in which blowouts were the norm. Perhaps this summarizes things best: The best player on the team was the punter. The offense was especially bad, scoring 16 or fewer points in eight games and getting shutout twice. The Boilermakers ranked last in the Big Ten in scoring

No. 12 Michigan rolls Illinois, claims outright B1G title

(AP) Nik Stauskas scored 24 points and No. 12 Michigan shot 70 percent from the 3-point line to win its first Big Ten title outright since 1986 with an 84-53 victory over Illinois on Tuesday night. The Wolverines (22-7, 14-3 Big Ten) were 16 of 23 from 3-point range, including Stauskas’ career-high seven. Michigan had the game in hand by halftime with a 52-30 lead. The Wolverines hit five straight 3-pointers midway through the half to break the game open. The 15-point run turned widened Michigan’s 20-17 lead to a comfortable 32-17. Photos: Michigan celebrates with B1G championship trophy

Michigan won its first outright Big Ten championship since 1986 on Tuesday night. Based on the subdued celebration in the locker room, the Wolverines are expecting to do a lot more damage the rest of the season. Video: Nik Stauskas answers Illini fans' 'U-S-A!' chants

It’s become common for Big Ten fans to shower Nik Stauskas with “U-S-A!” chants. The Canada native takes it all in stride, and in Tuesday night’s 84-53 Big Ten-clinching win at Illinois, he silenced said chants with a deep buzzer-beating 3-pointer in the first half. It amazed everyone, including the fans and the broadcast crew. Watch the whole sequence in this post. Heart condition ends Jay Simpson's Purdue career

(AP) Doctors have told Purdue forward Jay Simpson his career is over because of a heart condition. In a release issued Tuesday night, coach Matt Painter said the redshirt freshman was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – the same condition former basketball stars Hank Gathers, Reggie Lewis, Kevin Duckworth and Jason Collier all died from. Painter called the decision “tough” and “upsetting.” He said the Boilermakers were “very fortunate” their doctors were able to diagnose the condition. Simpson started seven times and played in 26 games this season, averaging 4.3 points and 3.6 rebounds. The release said Simpson is on course

Yarina: Michigan's top moments on way to B1G crown

Michigan claimed its first outright Big Ten title since 1986 in Tuesday night’s 84-53 victory at Illinois. The Wolverines, who won a share of the 2012 crown, have now been on top of the Big Ten in two of the last three seasons. For fun, I decided to highlight some of the top moments along the way to the outright crown. There are many top moments, but these are the ones that stick out the most. What do you think? Doug Nussmeier

Video: Gerry DiNardo sits down with Doug Nussmeier

Doug Nussmeier spent the last two seasons as the Alabama offensive coordinator. What drew him to Michigan, to replace the fired Al Borges? Gerry DiNardo sat down with the freshly minted Michigan play-caller to get that answer and so much more. He even quizzed Nussmeier on who the Wolverines play in the final week every season. Hint: Brady Hoke would be very happy with Nussmeier’s response.
