Michigan holds off Texas, 79-65, advances to Sweet 16

(AP) Nik Stauskas and Michigan figured out the best way to overcome Texas’ advantage inside. Just keeping hitting from long range. Stauskas made four of Michigan’s 14 3-pointers, and the Wolverines beat the Longhorns 79-65 on Saturday to advance to the NCAA tournament’s Sweet 16 for the second straight year. Stauskas finished with 17 points and eight assists as Michigan (27-8) moved on to next week’s Midwest Regional semifinals in Indianapolis. The second-seeded Wolverines will face the winner of Sunday’s Mercer-Tennessee game. [ AP RECAP | BOX | PLAY-BY-PLAY | BRACKET | DIENHART | SCOREBOARD ] HIGHLIGHT: @umichbball puts on

Dienhart: Four thoughts on today's games

It’s a big day for the Big Ten, as No. 2 Michigan, No. 2 Wisconsin and No. 4 Michigan State (I still can’t believe Sparty is a No. 4!) look to punch their ticket for the Sweet 16. Here are four thoughts on today’s games: Wisconsin vs. Oregon (7:45); Michigan State vs. Harvard (8:40). Michigan took down Texas in the first game. [ MORE: Get all of Dienhart’s 2014 NCAA tournament coverage ] 1. Michigan State obviously can’t expect Adreian Payne to go off for over 40 points today when it meets No. 12 Harvard. But, he probably can, given

Unsung big men key for Wolverines tourney run

Three teams and three games. That’s what it has come down to for the Big Ten on the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament. [ MORE: Dienhart: Thursday was a success for the Big Ten ] No. 2 Michigan will play No. 7 Texas. No. 2 Wisconsin will play No. 7 Oregon. No. 4 Michigan State will play No. 12 Harvard. These clearly are the three best teams in the conference. They are supposed to be here, primed to play for a spot in next week’s Sweet 16. And, frankly, they all should win their game on Saturday and advance.

'Nebrasketball' was fun while it lasted

It was fun while it lasted, Nebraska. The whole “Nebrasketball” thing was a phenomenon this season. The world was watching … or at least it felt like it for a while. And that’s pretty amazing, when you consider how far off the radar this program was flying. The Cornhuskers opened Big Ten play 0-4 and then went 11-3 the rest of the way. Who could forget a season sweep of Indiana, a win at Michigan State, and then home victories vs. Ohio State and Wisconsin? It was exciting stuff. There was a tangible buzz for Nebraska basketball in a state

Jay Bilas follows 1 person on Twitter: Lacey Holsworth

Eight-year-old Michigan State super fan Lacey Holsworth — featured on “The Journey” several times — has become an inspiration throughout the college basketball world, and beyond. That became more than evident today as Holsworth, who is battling an aggressive form of cancer known as neuroblastoma, found out she has a new follower on Twitter: ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas. Why is that unique, you ask? Because Holsworth is Billas’ first, and only person he follows on Twitter. Bilas send out the following tweet to his 658k followers earlier this afternoon. Catch up with our 10 Friday Big Ten headlines

Former Nebraska coach Doc Sadler isn’t envious of the success Tim Miles is having as Cornhuskers coach. To the contrary: The current Iowa State assistant is enjoying it. By the way: Sadler recruited Ray Gallegos, Shavon Shields and Benny Parker, who will attempt to deliver Nebraska’s first ever NCAA victory as it takes on Baylor. I think it will happen, people. I wonder if Huskers fans know that spring football is going on. *** It’s always nice to get that first win of the tourney under your belt. And that’s just what Big Ten champ Michigan did yesterday.
