There’s a reason they call it March Madness. No matter how hard we try to get it right every year, no matter how many times we pick a winner, change it, and then go back to it again, the NCAA tournament always leaves us with a bevy of unforeseen results. A 7 vs. 8 matchup in the championship game… Who could have possibly guessed that? But that’s what makes this tournament so enjoyable.

Michigan announced Monday that it will host its first Big Ten night game against Penn State on October 11. The Wolverines have played just two night games in the history of Michigan Stadium, both vs. Notre Dame, in 2011 and 2013. It’s a new thing, and Michigan is 2-0 under the lights.

This will be Michigan’s fourth season under Brady Hoke. And, make no mistake about it: It’s a crossroads campaign. No one in Ann Arbor was satisfied with the 7-6 record last season. And heads rolled, as offensive coordinator Al Borges was fired. Hoke looked to Alabama for a replacement, tabbing Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier.

While the NCAA Tournament is without question a national treasure, the madness comes at a cost—sometimes, teams with a combined 18 losses will play for the right to credibly call themselves the best team in the country. For the most part we all play along, accepting that the bounces and breaks that necessarily play a large role in a single-elimination tournament do nothing more than lead us to the correct answer. It’s not random, it’s clutch. Or so we say.
