The nonconference season is about to give way to the conference season, and I can’t wait. Conference play, of course, means the competition will stiffen up – a lot – on a nightly basis. Buckets and open looks will be harder to come by. With that in mind, I decided to rank my top five long-range shooters. Based on stats, these are the guys I want taking deep shots for me.

Who doesn’t like a good highlight-reel one-handed grab? Typically, the play is reserved for wide receivers, and plenty of Big Ten wideouts obliged this season. But a couple defensive backs, the guys who play defense because they don’t have the best hands, turned in two of the better one-handed grabs of the 2013 season.

Year Two under Tim Beckman brought hope in the form of an improved won-loss record, as Illinois went from two victories to four. The credit goes to a revived offense, as new coordinator Bill Cubit altered the scheme and maxed out the skills of senior quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase. Illinois averaged 29.7 points and 426.7 yards in 2013 after averaging 16.7 points and 296.7 yards in 2012.
