At halftime of Sunday’s game against Penn State, Wisconsin celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its 2002 Big Ten title team. The team, of course, was Bo Ryan’s first in Madison, Wis., and it wasn’t expected to compete for the Big Ten crown. The Badgers entered Big Ten play with a mediocre 7-6 clip, although they did upset Dwyane Wade and Marquette. Wisconsin figured things out, though, and went on to split the title with Illinois, Indiana and Ohio State, its first Big Ten crown since 1947. Watch the WisconsinAthletics YouTube video tribute in this post.
Wisconsin big man Jared Berggren displayed his footwork and acrobatic ability against No. 3 Ohio State on Saturday. Early in the first half of Wisconsin’s 58-52 loss, Berggren backed his way into the lane against star Jared Sullinger, did a half spin and, with his back to the basket, flipped it in for two points. ESPN color analyst Dan Dakich thought there may have been a travel on the play, but either way, it was a nimble and impressive bucket for the big man. Watch the play now.
With Wednesday night’s game against Northwestern well in hand late in the second half, Wisconsin’s Ryan Evans provided quite the highlight with a powerful alley-oop. On a night when the Badgers did a majority of their damage from downtown (12 of 23; 52 percent), it was Evans and his zero 3-pointers who carried the load. The junior scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds in the easy 77-57 victory at the Kohl Center. And then there was that late alley-oop. Also, let’s not forget Jordan Taylor’s perfect pass to make it all possible. Watch it now. Ball is the eighth Badger to win the prestigious award, voted on by the league’s coaches, and the first since Ron Dayne (1999). What do former NBA greats Dominique Wilkins, Moses Malone, Jack Sikma, Kevin McHale and Bernard King all have in common? They have fundamental back-to-the-basket moves named after them at Wiscosnin.
In case you missed it, there was a thrilling and – depending on your allegiance – controversial finish to the Michigan State-Wisconsin men’s hoops game Tuesday night. Trailing by three in overtime, Ryan Evans banked in what looked like a game-tying 3-pointer just as the buzzer sounded. The officials reviewed the call for nearly five minutes, and they eventually waved the basket off, giving Michigan State the 63-60 victory. Watch the shot and all of its replays now. In the end, the bucket was negated because there were two different clocks in the Kohl Center, one on the backboard and […]

During Monday’s highly entertaining Rose Bowl, Wisconsin running back Montee Ball attempted a potential highlight-reel hurdle of an Oregon defender. He didn’t fully leap over Oregon’s John Boyett and he wasn’t able to continue running when he landed, but the great effort made for a really cool picture. See a series of photos, courtesy of US Presswire’s Richard Mackson, from the hurdle in this post. Also, read the Rose Bowl game recap. We have liftoff! Another view of the liftoff. The former Ohio State star and two-time Big Ten Player of the Year has his number retired in the Value City Arena rafters, after all. He also had a long and successful NBA career.
When it comes to the Big Ten’s biggest surprises this men’s hoops season, it doesn’t get much bigger than Wisconsin’s Ben Brust. The sophomore, who managed just 45 minutes last season, was averaging 11.9 points per game entering Wednesday night’s contest against Green Bay. And on Wednesday, Brust ended the first half with a terrific buzzer-beater. Not only did the shot beat the horn, it also was from a highly difficult angle, practically behind the backboard. Watch the shot now. Read about Wisconsin’s easy win over Green Bay.
Wisconsin point guard Jordan Taylor is no stranger to making highlight-reel plays, but Friday night the preseason All-America compiled one of the better sequences of his fantastic career. It started with a steal that he converted into a layup, then he stole the ensuing inbound pass and dished to Jared Berggren for a big slam. So, in a matter of 10 seconds, Taylor picked up two steals, two points and an assist. Watch the outstanding sequence here. The Badgers cruised to victory in the game over Bradley, and you can read about it here.
