Last month, everyone was talking about how the Nebraska-Wisconsin game might be the Big Ten’s biggest game of the year. Three weeks later, it’s the Wisconsin-Michigan State game getting that treatment, and rightfully so. The game at Spartan Stadium highlights the Week 8 slate, which also includes Indiana-Iowa (noon ET) and Penn State-Northwestern (7) on BTN. It was only a matter of time before the new-look Big Ten featured its first weekend of all divisional matchups, and Week 7 is it. The five-game slate should be a lot of fun, too, especially with perfect Michigan and Illinois facing tough tests against Michigan State and Ohio State, respectively. It’s Week 6. Believe it or not, we’ll be midway through the 2011 Big Ten football season at the conclusion of Saturday’s slate of five Big Ten games. This week, BTN has Indiana hosting undefeated Illinois at a special time, 2:30 p.m. ET, and Northwestern entertaining perfect Michigan at 7. No one can say we’re being eased into Big Ten play this season. Saturday’s opening week features the Big Ten’s first divisional games (Minnesota at Michigan; Penn State at Indiana), in addition to Wisconsin hosting Nebraska in a battle of undefeated top 10 teams under the lights at Camp Randall Stadium. Get ready to be excited. The last full week of nonconference football is Saturday, and that means more competitive, entertaining and meaningful games are on the horizon. Week 4 also gives us the Big Ten’s first open weeks, with Northwestern and Purdue both off this weekend. As discussed here last Wednesday, the Week 2 schedule was a lot more challenging than what the Big Ten faced in the opening week. As a result, the Big Ten struggled to a 7-5 record, one week after going 10-2. Well, the Week 3 schedule has a few more tough tests, with dates against Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Arizona State and Miami (Fla.). The Big Ten opened the 2011 season with a 10-2 clip in Week 1. It was a solid opening act, considering the two losses — both away from home — came by a combined nine points. This week, the competition gets tougher with five BCS opponents on the slate, including No. 2 Alabama and Notre Dame. Unlike last week, all 12 games are on Saturday this time around. Football season is here, and that means it’s time to shift our focus to the Week 1 slate. Every Big Ten school is in action in the opening week, starting with reigning co-Big Ten champ Wisconsin hosting UNLV on Thursday night and finishing up with Indiana entertaining Ball State on Saturday night.
