In its final exhibition game at the Devaney Center and its first action under new coach Tim Miles, Nebraska took down Midland, 68-40, Wednesday night. Six Huskers scored at least eight points, led by Dylan Talley’s 10. Andre Almeida and David Rivers contributed nine points apiece, while Brandon Ubel and Sergej Vucetic both chipped in eight. Nebraska limited Midland to 28 percent from the field (15-of-53).
The 2012 Big Ten Men’s Soccer Tournament got underway Wednesday at Lakeside Field. No. 5 Michigan State, No. 3 Michigan and No. 2 Northwestern all advanced to Friday’s semifinal action, beating No. 4 Indiana, No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 7 Ohio State, respectively. In its exhibition finale, Minnesota dropped 3-happy Southwest Baptist, 86-59, Monday night at Williams Arena. The Bearcats attempted a whopping 36 3-pointers, hitting just 10 on the night (27.8 percent), while the Gophers shot 53 percent from the field. Rodney Williams scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds and swatted two shots, both game highs, while Joe Coleman put in a game-high 15 points.
Two exhibition games down, Glenn Robinson III sure is living up to the hype. The talented freshman scored a game-high 17 points to lead Michigan past Saginaw Valley State, 76-48, in the team’s exhibition finale Monday night at Crisler Center. It wasn’t pretty, but the Illinois men’s basketball team held on to beat West Chester, 75-66, in its exhibition finale Sunday at Assembly Hall. Tracy Abrams scored 17 points to pace four Illini in double figures. Twenty-one Illinois turnovers allowed West Chester to keep the score closer than expected. Illinois opens the regular season at 8 p.m. ET Friday vs. Colgate.
The Iowa men’s basketball team torched Quincy, 100-54, in exhibition action Sunday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa scored the game’s first 22 points and held Quincy without a field goal for the first 10-plus minutes. It also notched 41 points off 31 turnovers. Four Hawkeyes scored in double figures, paced by freshman Mike Gesell’s 18 points. Josh Oglesby and Eric May each scored 15, and Melsahn Basabe added 10.
Michigan State, Ohio State and Purdue all hosted exhibition games Tuesday night. As expected, the three teams carded wins over Northwood, Walsh and Montevallo, respectively. The fourth-ranked Penn State women’s soccer team clinched the 2012 Big Ten Championship after earning a 1-1 draw against Michigan on Sunday. The title marks Penn State’s 15th straight Big Ten crown, the most consecutive titles by a Big Ten women’s program in any sport. The win also clinched the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, which will be held Oct. 31 to Nov. 4 in Bloomington, Ind.
The No. 7 Penn State field hockey team continued its hunt for the Big Ten Championship Friday afternoon, defeating No. 21 Ohio State 3-0 for the fourth conference win of the season.
