Of late, Sam Thompson is turning each Ohio State game into his personal highlight reel. There was this from Wednesday night, and this from last Saturday. Thompson dropped more jaws in Saturday afternoon’s 90-72 win over UNC Asheville, this time breaking out a windmill dunk on a fastbreak. Watch the dunk right here.
OK, the time has come for teams to account for Sam Thompson on each and every inbound pass under Ohio State’s basket. There’s no excuse – not after the athletic sophomore threw down an inbound alley-oop for at least the fourth time in his year-plus in Columbus.
On the first Saturday sans Big Ten football, BTN aired five consecutive men’s basketball games. It all started at noon ET and came to an end just before 10:30 p.m. There were too many highlights to count during the 10-plus hours of action, but it’s safe to say none were bigger than Victor Oladipo and Sam Thompson’s ridiculous dunks.
Only a sophomore, Sam Thompson has plenty of individual highlights ahead of him. Thing is, the high-flying Buckeye may have a difficult time topping the highlight reel he directed in Saturday’s rout of Long Beach State. Thompson made a living high above the rim, throwing down a pair of impressive alley-oops and slamming home an inbound pass. Watch Thompson dunk the inbound pass now, and see his two alley-oops in this post.
By now, every Big Ten team knows that Ohio State’s Sam Thompson is a highlight waiting to happen. And yet, the freshman seems to consistently find open spaces around the rim, which, more times than not, leads to a jaw-dropping alley-oop. Thompson struck again in Tuesday night’s win over Illinois. This time, the pass came from Shannon Scott, not the usual Aaron Craft, but it was just as nice. And for good measure, Thompson also had a great block in the revenge win. Watch Thompson’s alley-oop now and see the terrific block in this post.
Most teams go an entire season, if not longer, without even attempting an alley-oop on an inbound pass. Then again, most teams don’t have an athlete quite like Ohio State’s Sam Thompson. Only a freshman, Thompson was on the receiving end of his second such play in Big Ten action alone Wednesday night. Which inbound alley-oop was better, though: Tonight’s or the one at Indiana on New Year’s Eve? Watch both incredible plays and vote on the best one in this post.
There’s a reason Thad Matta says Sam Thompson may be the best athlete he’s ever coached. The freshman has unreal athleticism, and he showcased it in Saturday night’s contest at Indiana. On an inbound play, Thompson broke for the hoop, seemingly jumped out of the gym and completed the alley-oop with a vicious throwdown. You may not see a better dunk all season. Seriously. Check out the ridiculous slam now. Those replays are beautiful, aren’t they?
Any way you define it, Ohio State’s Sam Thompson is an athlete. In fact, Ohio State head coach Thad Matta has been quoted as saying the freshman is the most athletic player he’s ever coached. Thompson hasn’t had many opportunities to showcase his talents in the Buckeyes’ first nine games, but he more than made up for it Wednesday night. In an easy win over South Carolina-Upstate, Thompson started things off by coming from behind and swatting a would-be breakaway layup. After that, he put on a dunk contest, prompting Jim Jackson to say: “He’s a highlight package waiting to happen.” Watch the block now and see his dunking ability inside.
