BTN asked for your feedback on three ideas for Big Ten divisional realignment, and thousands of viewers and readers sounded off. On Monday night’s “BTN Football Report,” our experts kicked these ideas around and discussed the topic of divisional alignment. Watch what BTN analysts Gerry DiNardo, Howard Griffith and Antwaan Randle El say in this video, then take the survey at the bottom of this post. This divisional survey was actually our second call for feedback. Our original survey on Big Ten expansion and realignment is still up, and you can take it right here.
One of the hottest debates around the Big Ten Conference’s announced plan to expand to 14 schools revolves around the future look of the two divisions. Currently, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Northwestern reside in the Legends Division while Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin are in the Leaders Division. The addition of Maryland and Rutgers poses this question: What comes next? We’ve launched a survey question in this post with three ideas for divisions. Tell us your choice and add any other feedback, too. BTN’s experts will discuss these ideas on Monday’s “Football Report” at 6:30 p.m. ET.
You have questions, I have answers in my weekly mailbag. Many of your questions this week center on Big Ten expansion. The tenor of most readers was the same: Miffed about the decisions to add Maryland and Rutgers. Read on, folks. There even is a basketball question. Listen to Dienhart on Wednesday night’s “#BTNLive.” This is just something to think about in the future. The Big Ten will give both of these schools the money they need to keep a good football coach. The money may also improve their facilities so they can recruit better in their market areas.
As BTN’s Gerry DiNardo mentioned during Tuesday’s coverage of Rutgers joining the Big Ten, there are three variables to consider when creating the conference’s new divisions: 1. Competitive balance; 2. geography; and 3. rivalries. Right now, no one knows how the new divisions will look, and that includes commissioner Jim Delany. Said Delany on the rumors out there: “Those are news to me.” The only thing that’s a guarantee is there will be change.
And then there were 14. We all knew this day was coming, right? We all knew the Big Ten would grow to 14 schools. The SEC made the move prior to this season, which certainly had to catch the eye of Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany. And when Notre Dame forged an alliance earlier this fall with the ACC to provide a home for all of its sports but football, the Big Ten reportedly began to move aggressively toward expansion. While Big Ten basketball fans have at least some familiarity with Maryland’s hoops tradition, not much is known about these Scarlet Knights. Let’s take a look at what Rutgers brings to the conference from a hoops perspective. Clearly, not all (any?) conference expansions are driven by basketball. On the football side of things, the Scarlet Knights have been solid for some time and are currently 18th in the BCS standings. It’s not hard to see why the […]
