It was a terrible shooting weekend for the title contenders. Collectively, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Michigan were 14 for 76 from three this weekend. Two of those teams nonetheless found a way to win. Thanks to Trey Burke’s rip of Keith Appling in the final minute of play, Michigan was able to defend its home court against the Spartans. Although this was a hard fought game, neither team played particularly well on the offensive end. Michigan missed all 12 of its three-point attempts, while Michigan State managed to make just 41 percent of its two-pointers. Credit the defense if […]

We’re only a few weeks away from Selection Sunday, and there’s only a handful of games left for teams to pick up signature wins. This weekend, some did, and some didn’t. Iowa picked up an important win over Minnesota on Saturday, rallying from an early 16-point deficit to an impressive 21-point win. And frankly, this game was over about midway through the second half. The turning point came when Fran McCaffrey deployed a zone defense, which flummoxed the Gopher attack. This isn’t the first time that Minnesota has looked confused against a zone—Northwestern sprung the upset against the Gophers by […]

The time is now for Iowa’s Roy Devyn Marble. This is his Hawkeyes team. He must be a leader and he must show the way if the program is to reach the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006. Iowa is 11-3, but it needs to enhance its resume. The Hawkeyes played a soft non-conference schedule, and they missed a chance for a big season-opening conference win on Monday when they fell at home to Indiana, 69-65. Marble’s struggles played a role in the defeat, as he hit just 1-of-14 shots en route to tallying 14 points. He knows […]

Indiana was upset in overtime by Butler in the Crossroads Classic on Saturday. IU’s undoing was defense, especially in the second half. 1st Half Efficiency 2nd Half & Overtime Efficiency Indiana 1.12 1.14 Butler 1.0 1.28 Indiana’s defense completely fell apart after halftime, especially on the perimeter. While Butler’s offensive rebounding kept them in the game at first, the teams actually ended up pretty even in that respect. But Butler’s outside shooting was fantastic, as the Bulldogs made 11 of their 24 attempts from beyond the arc. There’s two ways to look at this. The optimistic way is to point […]

Josh: It’s time to reflect on another season of Big Ten hoops. I think the rest of college basketball has finally taken notice of something that’s been true for the past 18 months or so–the Big Ten is the best conference in college basketball. Still, you look at the conference today, you see two great teams, 3 pretty darn good teams, a team good enough to make the Dance, and then mediocrity. Heck, even a couple of pretty bad teams. I mean, it’s hard to say the conference underachieved, but here goes–the conference underachieved. Sure, this is still the best […]

Also, we learned about Wisconsin’s Mike Bruesewitz’s hockey talents and saw how Purdue seniors Robbie Hummel and Lewis Jackson have battled through injuries this season. We also examined the amazing transformation of Michigan State’s Derrick Nix. Watch a clip from the show on Marble and see a couple bonus clips in this post.
It’s early in the conference season, but not so early that teams don’t have something they need to work on. To get them in shape, let’s hand out some homework assignments. Illinois: Yes, this team can defend. Even when its opponent shoots 59 percent from two-point range (as Nebraska did on Saturday), the Illini will usually hold the other side to under a point per possession. But can they score? In conference play, Illinois has yet to score over a point per possession. A big part of that is the dropoff of the big man, Meyers Leonard: Two-point percentage […]

Wednesday’s and Thursday’s games marked the end of non-conference play for many Big Ten members. With the holiday break looming, let’s run down who has been naughty and nice. It wasn’t easy, but Penn State handled a pesky Cornell squad by seven points. This was basically a three-point shooting contest, and the Big Red jumped ahead early by making those deep shots. The Nittany Lions were able to stay in the game by virtue of their offensive rebounding, and they finally took control late in the second half when their own threes started to fall.
