Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead returned for the first time Saturday since he hurt his left knee in the team’s season-opening win over Southern Miss. Wearing a bulky brace on the knee, Burkhead started and looked great in the early going. The senior ran for 79 yards on his first three carries, including a highlight-reel 61-yard scoring scamper. Watch the touchdown run now. [Related: Should Nebraska play Rex Burkhead vs. Idaho State?] We have to say, that run looked a bit like Burkhead’s long TD against Southern Miss.
Nebraska’s Rex Burkhead sprained the MCL in his left knee during the Huskers’ season-opening victory over Southern Miss, and he hasn’t played since. The star running back says he will play Saturday in the team’s final nonconference game. But should the Huskers play Burkhead and risk further injury against Idaho State? Tom Dienhart and Brent Yarina debate the topic in this post. An update: Burkhead is set to return on Saturday. Brent: I have to go with an emphatic no on this one. There’s no need to put Rex Burkhead at risk, especially against a team the caliber of Idaho […]

With Week 1 behind us, it’s time for my latest Big Ten Player Rankings. Again, I’m doing these a little different this year. Whereas I used to rank the top 10 players – a practice that was tough due to all the talent on both sides of the ball – I’ll rank the top six offensive and defensive players each week. Why six of both? Because it opens up the field, plus there are six teams in each division. So, consider offense the Legends Division and the defense the Leaders Division, or vice versa. OFFENSE 1. Michigan’s Fitzgerald Toussaint and Michigan State’s Le’Veon Bell usually are mentioned next. And then there is Nebraska’s Rex Burkhead, who seemingly always gets lost in the conversation. The senior may be the top back in the Big Ten this season. He finished third in the conference in rushing last season, rambling 284 times for 1,357 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Big Ten media days kick off Thursday in Chicago, so I thought I’d release my preseason Big Ten player rankings. I’m going to do these a little different this year. In previous years, I’d rank the top 10 players, which often became a tough task with all the talent on both sides of the ball.
Nebraska entered the season with dreams of playing in the Rose Bowl, but following a three-loss season, it gets a pretty nice consolation prize: The Capital One Bowl. The Huskers will face South Carolina, of the mighty SEC, at 1 p.m. ET Jan. 2. It figures to be a good game between two talented teams and two respected head coach, Bo Pelini and Steve Spurrier. BTN.com senior writer Tom Dienhart breaks down the game, gives his keys and offers his prediction. See it all in this post and find the entire 2011-12 bowl schedule. NEBRASKA (9-3) VS. SOUTH CAROLINA (10-2) […]
