Dienhart: Volunteers cruise by Wildcats in Outback Bowl

[ MORE: BOWL SCHEDULE | AP RECAP | BOX | PLAY-BY-PLAY ] The Wildcats lacked the big-play ability on offense to keep pace vs. the athletic Volunteers, one of the SEC’s fast-rising programs under Butch Jones that closed the year with six wins in a row in what was the largest margin of victory in Outback Bowl history.

Barry Alvarez to coach Badgers in upcoming Outback Bowl game

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez had said that the Badgers players asked him to coach the football team in the upcoming Outback Bowl against Auburn. After thinking it over, Alvarez said Thursday he will lead the team once again. “A number of the seniors met with me on Wednesday after our team meeting and asked if I would consider coaching the team,” Alvarez said. “I told them I would have to sleep on it. “After thinking it over and meeting with some of the seniors again this morning I have decided to coach. I feel this gives our assistants an

South Carolina stuns Michigan in back-and-forth game

Dylan Thompson came off the bench to throw a 32-yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds remaining Tuesday, giving No. 11 South Carolina a 33-28 victory over No. 19 Michigan in the Outback Bowl. Thompson replaced Connor Shaw during the winning drive, covering the final 43 yards after the Gamecocks’ starter began the march from his own 30. Devin Gardner’s third TD pass of the game had given Michigan a 28-27 lead. Shaw threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns after missing South Carolina’s regular-season finale against Clemson with a left foot sprain. Gardner threw for 214 yards in his fifth

Outback Bowl: Michigan vs. South Carolina

Michigan came close to winning the Legends Division but still is in search of its first league title since 2004. A win here would prime the program for a strong run in 2013, as this is a young roster. Three of the team’s four losses were to the top three teams in the nation: Notre Dame; Alabama; Ohio State. The other was to 10-win Nebraska. Season in review: Michigan football

Michigan was the highest-rated Big Ten team in the AP preseason poll at No. 8, but it was undone by youth, injuries and a brutal schedule. The offense struggled much of the season, getting little production from the tailbacks and an inconsistent effort up front in Brady Hoke’s second season in Ann Arbor. But this is a young team with a bright future that still came close to winning the Legends Division. Michigan unveils Outback Bowl uniform
