There were four other Big Ten bowl games leading up to Tuesday night’s 99th Rose Bowl between Wisconsin and Stanford. Northwestern was the lone victor, taking down Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl, while Michigan (Outback), Nebraska (Capital One) and Purdue (Heart of Dallas) all lost. Check out our photo gallery from the four early games in this post.
Dylan Thompson came off the bench to throw a 32-yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds remaining Tuesday, giving No. 11 South Carolina a 33-28 victory over No. 19 Michigan in the Outback Bowl. Thompson replaced Connor Shaw during the winning drive, covering the final 43 yards after the Gamecocks’ starter began the march from his own 30. Devin Gardner’s third TD pass of the game had given Michigan a 28-27 lead.
Michigan came close to winning the Legends Division but still is in search of its first league title since 2004. A win here would prime the program for a strong run in 2013, as this is a young roster. Three of the team’s four losses were to the top three teams in the nation: Notre Dame; Alabama; Ohio State. The other was to 10-win Nebraska.

Michigan was the highest-rated Big Ten team in the AP preseason poll at No. 8, but it was undone by youth, injuries and a brutal schedule. The offense struggled much of the season, getting little production from the tailbacks and an inconsistent effort up front in Brady Hoke’s second season in Ann Arbor.
It’s the holiday season. Time is precious. There are many options when it comes to Big Ten bowl games but there are also five of them on Jan. 1 alone. Which ones should you watch? What should you watch for in each? That’s where I come in with my nifty ranking of the Big Ten bowls from 1-7.
As it did last year, Michigan will wear a special adidas uniform for its bowl game, the 2013 Outback Bowl. Like last year’s look, this one is a white road uniform. It features several new wrinkles, of course, the most obvious being the addition of a matte helmet.

There are seven Big Ten teams in bowl games. And there would be two more, if not for Ohio State and Penn State being on probation. What’s the best quarterback duel? Wheres’ the best chance for an upset? Which game is the best candidate for a good, old shootout?

(AP) Kirk Cousins threw for 300 yards and one touchdown and Dan Conroy kicked a 28-yard field goal in the third overtime, giving No. 12 Michigan State a 33-30 victory over No. 18 Georgia in the Outback Bowl on Monday. Georgia’s Blair Walsh became the Southeastern Conference’s career scoring leader with a field goal in the second extra period. But he missed a 42-yarder in the first overtime after conservative play-calling and had a 47-yard attempt blocked on the final play of the game. Michigan State (11-3) ended a five-game bowl losing streak with its first postseason win since beating Fresno State in the 2001 Silicon Valley Bowl. Ten wins. A Legends Division title. And no BCS bowl. For the second consecutive season, Michigan State won 10 games, claimed some kind of Big Ten title – a division crown this year – and is left on the outside looking in when it comes to the BCS. The Spartans will play Georgia on Jan. 2 in the Outback in a game that pits the Big Ten and SEC title game losers. It’s also a rematch of the 2009 Capital One Bowl. BTN.com senior writer Tom Dienhart breaks down the game, gives his keys and offers his prediction. See it all in this post and find the entire 2011-12 bowl schedule.
