This will be a Saturday that helps define the Big Ten’s national image, with four big-time games vs. the Pac-12. And Purdue will be on a national stage with its clash vs. Notre Dame. Get prepped for all the action in Four Downs.
It’s early in the season, so it comes as no surprise that we saw a lot of new looks across the Big Ten during Week 2 action. See all of the uniform and helmet alterations the Big Ten showcased Saturday in this post. Have a picture of a Big Ten uniform or arena/stadium alteration? Please tweet it to me (@BTNBrentYarina) for my Clothes Call blog.
I’ve already provided my snap reactions for today’s Big Ten early games and afternoon tilts. Now, it’s time to look at the three night games. The Big Ten went 1-2 under the lights, highlighted by Northwestern’s 23-13 win over Vanderbilt.
Brett Hundley passed for 305 yards and four touchdowns in an outstanding Rose Bowl debut, Datone Jones sacked Taylor Martinez for a tiebreaking safety with 8:44 to play, and UCLA surprised No. 17 Nebraska 36-30 Saturday night.
UCLA’s Johnathan Franklin ran for 40 yards in the quarter, and the two teams are tied 27-27 at the end of the third. The Bruins broke the 24-24 stalemate when Ka’imi Fairbairn drilled a 21-yard field goal to cap off an eight-play, 23-yard scoring drive. UCLA squandered an opportunity to score a touchdown, missing a chance to score from Nebraska’s four-yard line.
UCLA’s Brett Hundley threw for 63 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 37 yards in the quarter, and the two teams are tied 24-24 at the end of the second. The Bruins made the score 14-10 after Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked a 35-yard field goal to finish off a 57-yard drive.
No. 14 Nebraska ran for 139 yards in the quarter, and the Cornhuskers lead 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Bruins struck first when Brett Hundley and Joseph Fauria hooked up for a 27-yard touchdown, the final play of a one-play, 27-yard drive.
Every week, I rank Saturday’s games based on how the teams match up. Where does your game fall on my list? Come find out in my Week 2 Previews. In case you you missed anything earlier this week, here are my weekly bowl projections, reader mailbag, and my predictions. Oh, and here’s an early stab at a Heisman Trophy tracker.
BTN.com’s Brent Yarina (@BTNBrentYarina) and Tom Dienhart (@BTNTomDienhart) love to talk football, and that includes prognostications. Every week, the duo gives their predictions for each Big Ten football game, plus includes a poll for fans to vote for their winners.
The second weekend of the season is approaching. And this Saturday is highlighted by three games vs. Pac-12 foes—all on the road: Wisconsin at Oregon State; Illinois at Arizona State; Nebraska at UCLA. And how will Penn State (at Virginia) and Michigan (vs. Air Force) respond coming off losses? There also are two rivalry games, with Purdue playing at Notre Dame and Iowa State visiting Iowa. We also have an SEC-Big Ten clash, with Vanderbilt playing at Northwestern.
Week 2 is here, and questions loom for each team following the opening weekend. Can Indiana score more? Will Rex Burkhead play? Those are just a few of the pressing questions I have for each school as we head toward Saturday. Read all of my Big Ten coverage here and don’t forget to send any of your questions my way for my weekly Big Ten Mailbag.
