See Dienhart’s immediate thoughts from Michigan State’s impressive rally and overtime victory at Wisconsin and Minnesota’s emphatic win over Purdue in this post. Michigan State 16, Wisconsin 13 OT 1. The Michigan State win kept the Spartans’ bowl hopes alive—and showed that the team has a lot of fight left after losing two in a row and three of four.
Andrew Maxwell threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Bennie Fowler in overtime, giving Michigan State a 16-13 victory and snapping Wisconsin’s 21-game home winning streak. It was the first win at Camp Randall since 2001 for the Spartans (5-4, 2-3 Big Ten), who have won four of the last six games against Wisconsin. It was the Badgers’ first loss at home since Oct 17, 2009. The teams have had a hand in the last two Big Ten titles, sharing it in 2010 and playing in the first conference championship game last year. But this was nothing like those games.
Wisconsin’s defensive line went crazy in the second quarter, penetrating Michigan State’s backfield so often that the Spartans finished the second quarter with minus-2 rushing yards. The Badgers take a 7-3 lead to the locker room. To be fair, neither team has found much rushing room thus far, as the Spartans have nine rushing yards to the Badgers’ 23. Both teams had 14 carries in the first half. The Badgers scored when Joel Stave and Jacob Pedersen hooked up for a 31-yard touchdown to cap a 10-play, 90-yard drive, giving Wisconsin the game’s first lead.
