LINCOLN, Neb. — This is what Bo Pelini had been waiting for: A big win. And that’s exactly what Saturday night’s 23-9 victory over Michigan was. Oh, Pelini has won some important games since taking over as Nebraska coach in 2008. One of my favorites was at the 2009 victory in the rain at Missouri. But, more often than not, Pelini has come up short when the lights have shined the brightest. Remember the Big 12 championship game losses after the 2009 and 2010 seasons? Sure you do. Tonight’s victory over Michigan, which was making its first trip to Nebraska […]

Wolverines quarterback Denard Robinson left the game late in the first half with a right elbow injury. Robinson, who spent the second half on the sideline in an overcoat, watched as freshman backup Russell Bellomy threw three interceptions. The Huskers (6-2, 3-1) moved into a first-place tie with Michigan in the Legends but own the tiebreaker. Nebraska held the Wolverines to negative rushing yardage (-3 yards) in the quarter. Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson has not returned since hurting his throwing arm late in the second quarter. Backup Russell Bellomy replaced the Michigan star and missed his first 10 attempts. The Cornhuskers made it 10-6 after turning P.J. Smith’s interception into a Brett Maher 19-yard field goal.
Nebraska sniffed out Michigan’s rushing attack in the second quarter, holding the Wolverines to 20 rush yards and the Cornhuskers now lead 7-6. Michigan’s Brendan Gibbons made two field goals in the quarter, including a 52-yarder. But the biggest news of the quarter was Denard Robinson’s injury that knocked him out of the game. The Michigan quarterback hurt his throwing arm late in the half and didn’t return before halftime. Nebraska took the game’s first lead after Taylor Martinez and Kenny Bell combined for a 32-yard touchdown on the last play of a six-play, 72-yard drive.
