It was all about Carrie Underwood on Saturday at the Breslin Center. The country star’s “Blown Away” tour landed in East Lansing, and a few lucky Spartans got to meet and greet the star of the night. Hockey coach Tom Anastos, men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo, football coach Mark Dantonio and AD Mark Hollis all posed for the photo above with Underwood. Random thought: It’s weird to see Izzo, all 5-foot-9 of him, look down at someone. Then again, the legendary coach always surrounds himself with uberly long athletes and the 5-foot-3 Underwood makes most everyone she encounters look tall.
During his press availability after Michigan State’s 23-7 win over Eastern Michigan, Spartans coach Mark Dantonio apparently wanted to keep the questions from reporters moving at fast pace. At one point it was almost like a no-huddle approach as Dantonio punctuated each of his short answers with the phrase, “Next question.” “I’m just loving all these questions,” Dantonio says at one point, “because they’re great ones.” Watch the entire exchange in the video in this post.
Perhaps you heard BTN entertained Michigan State coaches Wednesday in our Chicago studios. Mark Dantonio, Tom Izzo and the rest of the coaches were in town as part of the athletic program’s Michigan State coaches tour. What better way to spend the day at BTN than give the coaches a chance to do what we do on a daily basis, we thought? Yep, we had the coaches put on a live show. From production to graphics to makeup artists to analysts, everyone had a role. Watch MSUSpartans.com’s behind-the scenes video of the experience now. Not too bad, huh?
In 2009, the Big Ten Network brought you the inspiring story of Michigan State offensive lineman Arthur Ray Jr. – a blue-chip recruit from Chicago’s legendary Mt. Carmel High School who in 2007 was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left leg just weeks after signing with MSU. At the time of the piece, Ray was cancer-free and off his crutches for the first time in nearly two years. With his spirits high and an eagerness to return to football full-time, Ray suffered yet another setback – an infection. He wasn’t cleared to play again for another 18 months. Both of the conference’s sports boast a who’s who of the modern day coaching world. From Tom Izzo to Joe Paterno, the names are legendary and iconic. But what about when you consider the nation’s best football and men’s basketball coaching duos? The Big Ten is deep there, too. Rivals.com considered the topic Sunday, and all four writers mentioned Big Ten duos in their answers. Read the article here.
