Please tell me you aren’t shocked by news that Michigan State running back Le’Veon Bell is going pro a year early. Running backs have only so many carries in their body. And Bell already has used up a lot of them at Michigan State. In three years, he ran 671 times for 3,346 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also caught 78 passes, which surely will impress NFL scouts. Ahead of the show we’ve posted two highlight reels, one from Ohio State vs. Wiscosnin and the other from Iowa vs. Michigan. As part of our ongoing coverage of the various Senior Day celebrations our crew tracked Ball and Michigan’s Denard Robinson.
The Heisman chase still appears a bit muddled as we enter the home stretch. I think most agree that Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein is the clear leader, but his lead isn’t untouchable. And the spots behind him remain in flux. The race to stay in the chase features players like Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, Oregon’s Kenjon Barner, USC’s Marqise Lee and Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o, among others. You also can put Ohio State’s Braxton Miller in that group, too. Here’s how I shakedown the Big Ten’s Top Three Heisman contenders.
Is anyone gonna catch Braxton Miller as the Big Ten’s top Heisman contender? It may be difficult. The Ohio State quarterback has a great chance to enhance his Heisman dossier playing this Saturday at Indiana, which has the worst rushing defense in the Big Ten (196.8 ypg). But how much will Miller play if the game gets out of hand? Miller is a legit national contender for the Heisman, with West Virginia’s Geno Smith looking like the clear leader at this point.
With Week 6 behind us, it’s time for my latest Big Ten Player Rankings. Again, I’m doing these a little different this year. Whereas I used to rank the top 10 players – a practice that was tough due to all the talent on both sides of the ball – I’ll rank the top six offensive and defensive players each week. Why six of both? Because it opens up the field, plus there are six teams in each division. So, consider offense the Legends Division and the defense the Leaders Division, or vice versa.
This is a big week for the Big Ten’s top two Heisman contenders, as Ohio State’s Braxton Miller meets Michigan State’s Le’Veon Bell. The winner will become the Big Ten front-runner for the award while also getting a big leg up in a national race that also includes West Virginia’s Geno Smith and Oregon’s De’Anthony Thomas, among others. With conference play beginning in earnest across the nation, the competition will get more difficult for everyone—and some Heisman dreams are sure to drop, which will happen to Miller or Bell if their team loses this major Big Ten battle on Saturday […]
