Big Ten Geeks: Cupcakes aren't good for you

Any sober look at Iowa in the preseason would have put the team somewhere in the vicinity of the bubble. The team was coming off an 8-10 Big Ten campaign that, albeit one blessed with good fortune, portended good things to come with most of the roster returning this season. And that’s exactly what’s happened. Iowa is a top-40 team by Pomeroy standards, and sports a positive conference efficiency margin. Generally speaking, that’s a resume that should put the Hawkeyes in a good spot for earning an at-large bid on Selection Sunday. But after Iowa’s road loss to Nebraska, the

Swopshire undergoes season-ending knee surgery

There’s more bad health news to report from Evanston, Ill., as graduate student and former Louisville player Jared Swopshire underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season. Swopshire, who was just featured on the latest edition of “The Journey: Big Ten Basketball 2013,” injured the knee in the second half of Saturday’s loss at Iowa. Big Ten Geeks: Foul!

Wisconsin picked up an overtime win over Michigan in a contest with plenty of late-game drama. Wisconsin and Michigan both found themselves with plenty of fouls to give at the end of regulation on Saturday, but neither team opted to hack to deprive the opponent of a desperation heave. While I believe Wisconsin committed error when it opted not to foul Michigan before Tim Hardaway Jr. knocked down a three-pointer to break a tie with just a few ticks left, I don’ think Michigan did anything wrong by forcing Ben Brust to make a contested 40-foot runner at the buzzer.

'The Journey' profiles Payne & Swopshire

On Saturday night’s latest installment of “The Journey: Big Ten Basketball 2013,” we profiled Illinois, Michigan State’s Adreian Payne and Northwestern’s Jared Swopshire. Watch a segment from the show that spotlights Payne’s improvement as a player and maturation as a leader and Swopshire’s move from Louisville, a Final Four team last season, to Northwestern now. And jump inside for a couple bonus clips. Bonus clip No. 1: Swopshire shooting around with kids Bonus clip No. 2: D.J. Richardson shows off his shoe collection

Big Ten Geeks: Christmas Wishlist, Part II

Continuing the discussion of what each team could use this holiday season. Part one here. Nebraska (6-2) Already, Tim Miles has been successful in installing parts of his system. His Colorado State and North Dakota State teams dutifully cleaned the glass on defense, and we’re seeing similar results with the Huskers (a cynic would point out that defensive rebounding was a relative strength for Nebraska last year as well. To the cynic—stop being such a Scrooge.). But the team hasn’t been as quick to adopt Miles’ affinity for attacking the basket. In each of his last three seasons, Miles’ Colorado
