When it comes to Heisman races, this one is a yawner. And do you know why that’s funny? Because the 78th Heisman ceremony will be historic. On Saturday night in New York City, we may see the first freshman win the honor in Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel. We also could see the first true defensive player win it in Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o. (Kansas State’s Collin Klein is the other finalist, but he has no shot and is along for the ride. Enjoy it, kid. Bring a camera, too.) I suspect the voting will be close between the two clear […]

The finalists for the 2012 Heisman Trophy were announced Monday night, and there are a couple surprises: 1. The list includes only three players; and 2. neither Braxton Miller nor Montee Ball received an invite. No. 1 is the real shocker, however, considering there have been five finalists two of the past three years. The last time there were three: 2008. Here’s the list of worthy finalists: Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, Kansas State’s Collin Klein and Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o. Did Miller or Ball deserve an invite? Sure.
With Kansas State and Oregon losing in a wild Saturday night, the Heisman race seemingly has opened up. Some straw polls have Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel on top in the Heisman hunt. Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o, Kansas State’s Collin Klein and USC’s Marqise Lee also remain viable. The Big Ten’s biggest beneficiary to the upsets last week is Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller. And he can enhance his resume with a big effort in a win vs. Michigan on Saturday. Beat the Wolverines, and look good doing it, and Miller may at least guarantee a spot in New York for […]

The Heisman chase still appears a bit muddled as we enter the home stretch. I think most agree that Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein is the clear leader, but his lead isn’t untouchable. And the spots behind him remain in flux. The race to stay in the chase features players like Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel, Oregon’s Kenjon Barner, USC’s Marqise Lee and Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o, among others. You also can put Ohio State’s Braxton Miller in that group, too. Here’s how I shakedown the Big Ten’s Top Three Heisman contenders. If Klein misses time or is ineffective, that would open opportunities for Ohio State’s Braxton Miller and others like Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o and Alabama’s A.J. Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller was the conference’s top contender, but he had to leave last week’s game vs. Purdue with an injury. And when he departed, Miller’s numbers weren’t impressive. And this was vs. a Boilermaker defense that had been shredded in each of the two previous games prior to coming to Columbus. Still, Miller has some big games left to impress voters, including this week at Penn State. He also still will meet Wisconsin and Michigan.
Is anyone gonna catch Braxton Miller as the Big Ten’s top Heisman contender? It may be difficult.
For a second Saturday in a row, the Big Ten’s top Heisman contenders will square off. Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez will lead his Cornhuskers into Ohio State to face Buckeye quarterback Braxton Miller in arguably the biggest game to date in the Big Ten this season. The winning signal-caller figures to assume the throne of “top Big Ten Heisman contender.” Miller also shows up in some Heisman straw polls as a top contender for the award, along with West Virginia’s Geno Smith, Oregon’s DeAnthony Thomas, Kansas State’s Collin Klein, USC’s Marqise Lee and Florida State’s E.J. Manuel—among others.
