In Monday’s national championship, Michigan kept up its impressive tournament run of scoring on the college game’s best defenses, but its own defense just couldn’t slow Louisville enough to take home the title. In the first half, Michigan’s offensive efficiency came from the unlikeliest of sources. Trey Burke picked up his second foul just nine minutes into the game, and the reins of the attack were handed to freshman backup Spike Albrecht, who had scored a total of 67 points all season. Improbably, Albrecht scorched the nets for 17 points on just seven shots in the first half, including four-for-four […]

On Friday, Mike predicted that whichever of Syracuse or Michigan scored over a point per trip would win, and he further opined that Michigan was up to the task and would prevail with a five-point win. Turns out, Mike was wildly off. While a point per trip was indeed enough to win (Syracuse managed just 0.93 points per possession), and while the Wolverines did, in fact, win by five points, the final score was 61-56—far afield from Mike’s 65-60 prediction. So, hold off on going to Vegas, Mike. Michigan’s win was one of its most unusual this season.
While most have been focused on the drama that has led to this weekend’s Final Four (which we will preview Friday), Iowa has quietly been dispatching solid teams in the NIT. The Hawkeyes had a relatively easy time with Maryland last night and will face Baylor in the championship Thursday night. The most impressive aspect of this postseason run has been the return of Iowa’s non-conference offense. Over four NIT games, the Hawkeyes have scored a cumulative 1.12 points per trip, a level of output that Iowa surpassed only five times in 20 games against Big Ten foes.
With two-and-a-half minutes left against Kansas, Michigan was losing by 10, and its season looked done. From that point on, Michigan went on a 104-72 run over the rest of the weekend. Trey Burke’s heroics were followed up by the complete demolition of Florida, which had the unfortunate luck of drawing “December Michigan.” If you recall, this was the Wolverines team that wasn’t all that fond of missing shots. Back then, Nik Stauskas was hitting something like 60 percent of his three-point attempts. Against Florida, he made all six. But the real story over this Tournament has been the play […]

Thursday was a mixed bag for the Big Ten, with just one team advancing to the Elite Eight in unconvincing fashion. Before Friday’s action tips off, let’s have a look at last night’s results. Ohio State put on a repeat performance of the Iowa State win, pairing an excellent offensive attack with a strangely permissive defense. The result against Arizona was much the same as it had been a round earlier, with the Buckeyes stumbling late and giving up a late lead, only to hit a shot in the waning moments to win it. The only difference was that this […]

Indiana and Wisconsin tipped things off on Saturday in a back-and-forth affair that did not go according to script. For one, Indiana was supposed to be the athletic offensive rebounding powerhouse, but it was Wisconsin that was crashing the offensive glass early, collecting 43 percent of its misses in the first half. Additionally, one would expect the Badgers and their miniscule turnover rate to be stingy with the giveaways, but turnovers plagued Bo Ryan’s team all game long. Wisconsin turned it over on 25 percent of its possessions, the second-highest mark for the season (MSU’s steamrolling of Wisconsin in East […]

Scouting matters. Have all the talent in the world, but if you don’t know your opponent, you’ll get sliced up. So credit Indiana for blowing up Illinois’ offense by stretching its defense well out to the perimeter in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. There was no space to breathe for Illinois’ shooters, and consequently just 6 of Illinois’ 27 field goal attempts were three-pointers in the first half. Now, it may not seem like a big deal to take the three-pointer away from a team shooting 29 percent on threes in conference play.
In what amounted to an elimination game for a potentially shared Big Ten title, Michigan State steamrolled Wisconsin by 15 points. This game was certainly no work of art, as both teams struggled mightily to score in the half court set. The defense had the upper hand at both ends of the court, but the difference came in the form of Wisconsin live-ball turnovers. When the Spartans got steals, they were able to score in transition. Otherwise, the Badgers played their typical shut down defense–Michigan State scored only 0.77 points per trip in possessions that did not follow a steal.
