Northwestern senior Drew Crawford will remain at Northwestern for his final year of eligibility during the 2013-14 season. Crawford averaged 13.5 points per game earlier this season before missing the rest of it after shoulder surgery. He enters his final season of play ranked 10th in school history with 1,418 career points. An economics major, he’s graduating with one year of eligibility remaining and could have transferred. Instead, he’ll play for new coach Chris Collins, who replaced the fired Bill Carmody. “I can’t wait to be on the court with my Northwestern teammates again this upcoming season,” Crawford said in […]

The Big Ten had a relatively bad weekend, dropping marquee games against other high-major conference teams. The main event was a battle between two top-10 teams when Kansas visited Columbus. Given that the game was on the Buckeyes’ floor, Ohio State should have won this game, and probably by more than just a point or two. Instead, Kansas ended up with a relatively comfortable 8-point win. The Jayhawks led most of the way, and started pulling away with about ten minutes left. There was no great mystery as to why OSU lost—they were terrible shooting the ball, both inside and […]

IU’s undoing was defense, especially in the second half. 1st Half Efficiency 2nd Half & Overtime Efficiency Indiana 1.12 1.14 Butler 1.0 1.28 Indiana’s defense completely fell apart after halftime, especially on the perimeter. While Butler’s offensive rebounding kept them in the game at first, the teams actually ended up pretty even in that respect. But Butler’s outside shooting was fantastic, as the Bulldogs made 11 of their 24 attempts from beyond the arc. There’s two ways to look at this.
Bad news from Northwestern, as the school announced that senior forward Drew Crawford will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the 2012-13 season. Crawford has been diagnosed with having a torn labrum and is eligible to seek a medical hardship waiver. Crawford is one of the Big Ten’s top scorers, so losing him hampers a program that looked primed to make its first trip to the NCAA tourney. Players like Reggie Hearn, Jared Swopshire and Dave Sobolewski need to step up. Crawford has started all 10 games for the 7-3 Wildcats and ranks second in […]

Continuing the discussion of what each team could use this holiday season. Part one here. Nebraska (6-2) Already, Tim Miles has been successful in installing parts of his system. His Colorado State and North Dakota State teams dutifully cleaned the glass on defense, and we’re seeing similar results with the Huskers (a cynic would point out that defensive rebounding was a relative strength for Nebraska last year as well. To the cynic—stop being such a Scrooge.). But the team hasn’t been as quick to adopt Miles’ affinity for attacking the basket.
One week of Big Ten play in the books, it’s time to release my latest Big Ten men’s hoops power rankings. The rankings are not meant to mimic the Big Ten standings. What fun would that be? They aren’t scientific, either. They’re simply my thoughts on where each Big Ten team stands right now and who would win on a neutral court. Agree? Disagree? Tweet @BTNBrentYarina or leave your comments below. See Brent’s rankings in this post. 1. Michigan State (13-2, 2-0) – The Spartans haven’t lost since the season-opening defeats to North Carolina and Duke.
Wednesday’s and Thursday’s games marked the end of non-conference play for many Big Ten members. With the holiday break looming, let’s run down who has been naughty and nice. It wasn’t easy, but Penn State handled a pesky Cornell squad by seven points. This was basically a three-point shooting contest, and the Big Red jumped ahead early by making those deep shots. The Nittany Lions were able to stay in the game by virtue of their offensive rebounding, and they finally took control late in the second half when their own threes started to fall.
