Iowa is coming off a 4-8 season, its worst since 2000. So, no doubt, a good start would help. In fact, Bryce Miller of HawkCentral.com thinks the Hawkeyes’ opener Aug. 31 vs. Northern Illinois will set the tone for this oh-so-critical season. How big and key is this opener? Miller says it’s been more than a quarter of a century since a win to kick off things for Iowa felt so necessary. This isn’t an overstatement. A win over the Huskies, who are coming off an Orange Bowl trip, could push the Hawkeyes to a 2-0 start as they head […]

The Big Ten is moving away from games vs. FCS foes. That’s something we all can stand and cheer about! But, many “tomato cans” remain on the schedule in 2013. In fact, a few made this list of the “15 most shameful games matchups of 2013.” Tennessee Tech at Wisconsin; Western Illinois at Minnesota; Missouri State at Iowa all made the list. But I’m trying to figure out how the Florida A&M at Ohio State matchup didn’t make this dubious list. It may be the biggest mismatch of all. It’s all a celebration of Indiana’s trip to the College World Series, the Big Ten’s first entrant in the grand event since 1984. The Indianapolis Star has a neat photo feature that looks at over 20 of the best all-time MLB players produced by Big Ten schools. Nice list! Among others, there are Minnesota’s Dave Winfield, Purdue’s Moose Skowron, Illinois’ Lou Boudreau, Indiana’s Ted Kluszewski, Michigan State’s Kirk Gibson, Michigan’s Barry Larkin and my fav–Ohio State’s Frank Howard! According to Phil Steele, the Badgers will have the most experienced team in the Big Ten in terms of having the top percentage of returning lettermen. Bret Bielema knew this day was coming. He mentioned it a few times prior to his shocking departure for Arkansas, pointing toward 2013 as being a potentially big season with a veteran roster. Well, that day has arrived—only Gary Andersen is there to reap the benefits. Here’s a look from 1-12 at the most experienced teams in the Big Ten.
Would Big Ten night games in November be good? Andrew Logue of the Des Moines Register wonders. And, so do I. Oh, night games in November are coming. Me? I’m not for it. I love football in Saturday afternoon sunshine. But, it’s all about TV—which means late or prime-time starts. And, some ADs wonder why attendance is lagging when little to no consideration is given to the people who actually buy tickets to games. Instead, seemingly the only people who matter are those sitting at home watching on TV. It’s true. You know it. Yes, late start times aren’t the […]

Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez has progressively gotten better each year in Lincoln. It’s no accident. A reason for that improvement has been his offseason work with quarterback guru Steve Calhoun in southern California. Well, Martinez is still working with Calhoun, looking to punctuate his Cornhuskers career in style. And, hopefully, the program’s first league title since 1999. “We refined everything,” Calhoun told Omaha.com. “He looked really, really good.” Especially that back right leg. It’s the key, according to Calhoun. It helps Martinez maintain balance in his throwing stance to achieve maximum accuracy. Would a kid REALLY base a decision on picking a school on uniforms? Really? (Shaking my head.) Aside from sticking the ball in the gut of running back Le’Veon Bell, nothing else worked with much consistency. In particular, the play of quarterback Andrew Maxwell came under scrutiny. Dantonio says Maxwell is the guy—for now, at least. “As I said after the spring game, right now Andrew Maxwell is our quarterback,” Dantonio said, “and we’re moving in that direction, but we’ve got to play […]
