It was a terrible shooting weekend for the title contenders. Collectively, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Michigan were 14 for 76 from three this weekend. Two of those teams nonetheless found a way to win. Thanks to Trey Burke’s rip of Keith Appling in the final minute of play, Michigan was able to defend its home court against the Spartans. Although this was a hard fought game, neither team played particularly well on the offensive end. Michigan missed all 12 of its three-point attempts, while Michigan State managed to make just 41 percent of its two-pointers. Credit the defense if […]

On Saturday, Iowa defended its home court with a win over Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes raced out to a 30-10 lead before the Badgers finally got something going on offense, though I think that early start for Wisconsin overshadows what kind of game this really was. Both offenses scored over a point per possession, which is a good sign for this Iowa offense that had been struggling somewhat in conference play. Most of the problem can be traced to some awful outside shooting as Iowa has struggled to replace the shooting acumen of Matt Gatens. And Saturday was no different, as […]

Illinois’ weaknesses were exposed in a road loss against a mediocre Purdue team last night. The concerning thing isn’t so much that Illinois lost—Purdue isn’t a terrible team, just a terrible offensive team—it’s that it lost to Purdue despite hitting 10 three-pointers (38% from three on the night). Thus, it appears the “Illinois wins when it shoots well” maxim is incorrect. This team can shoot well, and still lose. The fact of the matter is that Illinois is a mediocre defensive team, and especially awful on the defensive glass. Purdue grabbed 44 percent of its misses—including four off of missed […]

There are plays that fans never forget, and D.J. Byrd came up with one in Wednesday’s 68-61 win over Illinois that the Purdue faithful should have no trouble remembering. With 21.5 seconds left, Purdue leading 63-61 and Jacob Lawson at the free-throw line, Byrd corralled a missed freebie, on his knees, and managed to call a timeout before going out of bounds. Watch the play here. Whether he traveled or shouldn’t have been granted the timeout due to the fact he was falling out of bounds, it’s still a veteran/smart/creative hustle play. And Byrd wasn’t done with the big-time plays.
Indiana was upset in overtime by Butler in the Crossroads Classic on Saturday. IU’s undoing was defense, especially in the second half. 1st Half Efficiency 2nd Half & Overtime Efficiency Indiana 1.12 1.14 Butler 1.0 1.28 Indiana’s defense completely fell apart after halftime, especially on the perimeter. While Butler’s offensive rebounding kept them in the game at first, the teams actually ended up pretty even in that respect. But Butler’s outside shooting was fantastic, as the Bulldogs made 11 of their 24 attempts from beyond the arc. There’s two ways to look at this. The optimistic way is to point […]

Continuing the discussion of what each team could use this holiday season. Part one here. Nebraska (6-2) Already, Tim Miles has been successful in installing parts of his system. His Colorado State and North Dakota State teams dutifully cleaned the glass on defense, and we’re seeing similar results with the Huskers (a cynic would point out that defensive rebounding was a relative strength for Nebraska last year as well. To the cynic—stop being such a Scrooge.). But the team hasn’t been as quick to adopt Miles’ affinity for attacking the basket. In each of his last three seasons, Miles’ Colorado […]

Up until Saturday night, Illinois’ season has been described in strange terms. At that point, it was “surprising” that Illinois was undefeated. The Illini won the Maui Invitational, which was a very “prestigious” early-season tournament. This isn’t normally how one talks about an undefeated team that’s ranked in the top-15. That’s because very few people were declaring that this team was actually as good as it looked on paper. That’s partly a function of having not played a murderer’s row of opponents (Butler destroyed the Maui bracket, making it such that Illinois might not have played a single NCAA Tournament […]

Purdue basketball fans were treated to a surprise musical performance at Friday night’s Tip-off Before Kick-off. The “performer” was Dirk Hunter. Actually, it was Purdue senior D.J. Byrd, in costume, acting as a fake country artist. Byrd pulled off the alias for about four minutes before he took off his shirt and revealed a No. 21 Purdue jersey. He then took off his cowboy hat and wig, and Purdue fans erupted when they noticed it was Byrd. Watch Byrd entertain the crowd at Mackey Arena now Filed under: Uncategorized Tagged: D.J.
