Purdue is going with a Black Out for today’s game vs. No. 4 Ohio State on BTN/BTN2Go. And, yes, that includes a new black matte alternate helmet. The Boilermakers went with a slow reveal of the helmet, decorated with train tracks down the middle, and didn’t debut it until they came out of the tunnel before kickoff. They warmed up in their primary lid.
A new basketball season is upon us. Before the ball tips early next month, let’s take a look at some of the new uniform and court designs we’ll see around the Big Ten this season. A little warning, there aren’t nearly as many changes this year as there were last, and that goes for both the uniforms and the courts.
Ohio State will wear its Nike “Rivalry” uniform Saturday night for the second time in its last three home games. This time, though, the Buckeyes will rock pink accents to promote breast cancer awareness. In other words, Ohio State will have pink gloves and pink socks. The next Nike “Hyper Elite” basketball uniforms have arrived. Thursday, Penn State unveiled its new uniform for the upcoming season. Iowa, another Big Ten Nike school, released its “Hyper Elite” uniform Wednesday.

Expectations are high for Iowa men’s basketball this season. And why not? The Hawkeyes return every major contributor, except for Eric May, from a youthful and talented team that went 9-9 in Big Ten play and advanced to the NIT championship game. Here’s something else to get Hawkeyes fans excited: Iowa will wear new uniforms in 2013-14.
If you didn’t hear, Ohio State is wearing a Nike “Rivalry” uniform for tonight’s primtime battle vs. Wisconsin. It’s very similar to the “Pro Combat” uniform the Buckeyes wore in last year’s win over archrival Michigan. In fact, the only difference is the jersey collar, which features seven Buckeye Leaves, a new design for all Ohio State uniforms.

Nebraska football’s official twitter account, @Huskers, has announced that the team will wear a No. 36 decal on its helmet for Saturday’s game against UCLA. The decal is in honor of UCLA redshirt freshman wide receiver Nick Pasquale, who was struck by a car and killed this past weekend in his hometown of San Clemente, Calif. Pasquale was 20 years-old.
In case you haven’t heard, Nebraska will wear a new adidas alternate uniform Saturday vs. UCLA. The uniform includes a white helmet, with a black stripe down the middle, a two-tone facemask, a black jersey and white pants, with a black stripe down the side of the legs.
Rejoice, fans of outdoor hockey! Minnesota will host Ohio State on Friday, Jan. 17 at TCF Bank Stadium. The Gophers made the news official Tuesday, and they also released a rendering of the stadium. See a picture of it in this post.
Today is College Colors Day, the day when people across the nation dress in their college school colors to celebrate the beginning of a new college football season. To be fair, the season kicked off Thursday night, with Indiana and Minnesota rolling to victories, and it continues tonight. But it’s all about celebrating that first Saturday of the season on the last work day of the week.
With kickoff less than a week away, coupled with the fact Northwestern and Wisconsin both just unveiled new alternate helmets, it’s time to take one last look at all the different uniform and helmet designs we’ll see in the Big Ten this fall. Northwestern’s already vast helmet collection is growing. On Thursday, the Wildcats unveiled a white alternate lid that they will wear in the season opener at Cal. The new helmet brings Northwestern’s collection to five.
The Wisconsin football team unveiled a new alternate helmet Thursday that it will wear in Week 2 vs. Tennessee Tech and, possibly, for other games this season. The Badgers revealed the helmet to the players in a YouTube video that is included at the bottom of this post.
Ohio State hockey players have spoken, and they are fans of the school’s Buckeye Leaves. One look at the team’s new alternate jersey is all the proof one needs. The Buckeyes’ new sweater, voted upon by current and former players and unveiled Wednesday, features the popular logo all over it.
A season ago, Big Ten football and basketball fans had to get used to seeing the “B1G” logo on their teams’ sacred playing surfaces. The conference made the logo mandatory on all football fields, basketball courts and jerseys, and now it’s implementing the same rule across other sports. Like hockey.
Late on this , but Iowa State recently announced it will sport throwback uniforms when it hosts Iowa on Sept. 14. A season ago, if you remember, Iowa wore throwbacks vs. the Cyclones at Kinnick Stadium.
That was quick. Two days after Jay Bilas took to Twitter to call out the NCAA as hypocritical, NCAA president Mark Emmert announced Thursday afternoon that the NCAA will stop selling the individual jerseys of players on its website.
For a change, people are excited about Nebraska basketball. It’s easy to see why, too, what with Tim Miles’ track record and gregarious personality, and a young nucleus headlined by sophomore Shavon Shields. And then there’s the state-of-the-art Pinnacle Bank Arena, Nebraska’s new $179 million home this winter.

A month ago, pictures surfaced of Ohio State football jerseys that featured Buckeye Leaves on the back of the collar. There was some question about the authenticity, though, and at the time a school spokesman told BTN.com that the team had no updates regarding uniforms.
There are some ridiculous facemasks out there. Like this one, this one and this one. Ari Wasserman, of the Buckeye Sports Bulletin, was at Ohio State’s facility for an instructional clinic Thursday, when he noticed a unique Ohio State-themed facemask. Luckily, he tweeted a picture of it.

Future Big Ten member Rutgers is retiring its first football jersey number. On Sept. 14, the Scarlet Knights will retire Eric LeGrand’s No. 52 at High Point Solutions Stadium. LeGrand, a former defensive tackle, was paralyzed when he broke two vertebrae while making a tackle on a kickoff return in an October 2010 game.
