It was known that Iowa would wear throwback uniforms for its annual rivalry game vs. Iowa State this season, but now we know what the duds will look like. Iowa SID Matt Weitzel confirmed Tuesday that the Hawkeyes will wear uniforms to commemorate the 1921-22 back-to-back Big Ten championship teams that went a combined 14-0. See the uniform in this post.
Another season, another new look for the Breslin Center floor. @MSU_Basketball tweeted a photo Friday afternoon of the school’s redesigned basketball court, its third look in as many years. If you recall, Michigan State introduced this court last season — a change made partly because of Nike’s new Michigan State logo — after playing several years on this court. See the picture in this post.
I post this for my Purdue fans. I came across a Brad Miller shirt on the internet today, and it’s pretty awesome. The shirt, which can be purchased on skreened.com, features nine squares on the front, each one representing a different jersey Miller has worn during his career, starting with Purdue and ending with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Perhaps you heard Spartan Stadium will have new scoreboards in 2012. Here’s a fact you probably didn’t know: The board’s video screen will be the fifth largest in the country, according to AD Mark Hollis. More important, the school says the $10 million project will give Michigan State the biggest scoreboard in Michigan. In other words, it will be bigger than anything at Michigan Stadium. It’s called a rivalry for a reason, people. See a picture of the scoreboard in this post and see more here.
It’s been rumored for quite some time that Big Ten football teams will wear a “B1G” patch on their jerseys this fall. Thanks to a tweet from Illinois assistant Alex Golesh (@coachgolesh) — a tweet that has since been deleted — we have a better idea of what it will look like. Golesh tweeted out a picture of the Illinois-themed patch Sunday night, and it looks pretty much as you’d expect.
While growing up in the 1990s, many of my friends were Michigan and Florida State football fans. Living in Lake Forest, Ill., the Michigan allegiance was understandable — even though none of my friends had ties to the school despite the vast number of Michigan alums residing in Chicago suburbs. But Florida State? Not so much.
If you’re looking for Roy Roundtree on the field next season, you won’t find him in his familiar No. 12 jersey. Michigan announced Friday that Roundtree will wear Desmond Howard’s No. 21 “Michigan Football Legend” jersey for the 2012 season. The jersey includes a patch on the upper left chest that honors the Michigan legend and Heisman Trophy winner. See a picture of the patch in this post.
Michigan unveiled plans for new men’s hockey uniforms for the blue and maize jerseys, and they have a little something old and a little something new. Note that the white jersey will remain unchanged. It’s a move to honor some of the great Michigan teams of the past. As the release notes, “fans will recognize Michigan’s redesigned maize jersey as the same uniform that the Wolverines wore in the “Big Chill at the Big House” outdoor game vs. Michigan State.” See the video from that game in this post to refresh your memory. You can also see the new jerseys over at MGoBlue.com, where they launched a full photo gallery of the uniforms, too.
Based on the rivalry’s previous hardware, the new Cy-Hawk Series Trophy couldn’t be anything but an improvement. On Tuesday, the new trophy was selected in a landslide vote. And, as expected, it will look a lot better hoisted above players’ heads than its predecessor. The trophy, which received 8,002 of the 10,282 votes (78 percent), features both mascots, corn stalks and a football. The base includes both logos and a list of previous season winners. See the new trophy and the old one in this post.
Purdue isn’t just tinkering with its train logo (see it here), the motion “P” also will sport a slight makeover in the 2012-13 academic year. There will be a gold one, which the school says will serve as the primary logo, and a black one. As was the case with the new train logo, the gold is a lighter shade. See the new gold motion “P” in this post.
According to The Exponent, Purdue will have a new logo in the coming months. Like the old one, it still features the train, only with a few tweaks, recommended by Nike. See the logo in this post.
This just in from HawkeyeSports.com: The Iowa football team will wear 1921-22 throwback uniforms when the Hawkeyes host Iowa State on Sept. 8. The helmet is the old gold, with matching gold on the jersey and pants and gray facemasks. The jersey is a black body with an old gold semicircle under arms and white numbers front and back. There will be no player names. The shoes? Black with black laces. The socks? All black as well. There’s a small photo of the jersey at HawkeyeSports.com.
The Michigan football team sported maize shoelaces during Saturday’s Spring Game at Michigan Stadium in an effort to support Lace up for Michigan (@LaceUpForUM), a fund-raising effort initiated and run by Wolverine student-athletes with support of the school’s athletic dept. And for those wondering, no, Denard “Shoelace” Robinson didn’t tie the maize strings.
As part of “Honor and Serve Day” on Sunday, May 6, the Illinois baseball team will wear special orange and blue camouflage jerseys in its series finale against Michigan State. The event, according to a FightingIllini.com release, is designed to honor University of Illinois student veterans and all of America’s military heroes, plus to serve the Champaign-Urbana community.
The NCAA men’s basketball championship game is Monday night, but here at BTN.com, our fans already have crowned the 2012 Big Ten Football Uniform Bracket champion. Nebraska is one of the few teams in the nation that doesn’t need to touch its football uniform one bit. Still, in this day and age where recruits factor uniforms into their ultimate decision, teams must accept the trend. The Huskers have. According to an AP story, Nebraska will wear an alternate uniform for one home game in 2012. The uniform, designed by adidas, has not been released, although you can find a possible option in this post.
The 2012 NCAA men’s basketball title game participants were determined Saturday night, and it will be Kentucky vs. Kansas. Here at BTN.com, we’ve reached the finals of our 2012 Big Ten football uniform bracket. The matchup: No. 1 Michigan vs. No. 5 Iowa. Who’s going to be the winner? The New Orleans Saints’ official Twitter account (@Saints) released photos of the 2012 Final Four court and other scenes around the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, home of this year’s Final Four. So, if you’re interested, get your first look at the court Ohio State will be playing on Saturday night. Spoiler alert: It’s in the same design as all the NCAA tourney courts, only it’s green — two shades of it — where those courts are black, and it features the Final Four logo at midcourt. See pictures in this post.
We’re off to the semifinals of BTN.com’s Big Ten football uniform bracket, and the upsets continue. No. 5 Iowa stunned No. 2 Penn State and Cinderella No. 9 Purdue is one win away from playing for it all after downing No. 10 Illinois. Also, No. 1 Michigan drilled No. 6 Michigan State to advance to the title matchup, by virtue of amassing the most quarterfinal votes.
The votes are in, and we’ve reached the second round of BTN.com’s 2012 Big Ten football uniform bracket. Much like the NCAA tourney, there were a couple early upsets, including No. 10 Illinois taking down No. 3 Ohio State. Not to be outdone, No. 9 Purdue also stunned No. 4 Nebraska. Check out all the first-round decisions. Also, cast your Round 2 votes in this post.
The word bracket overtakes our vocabulary every March — much to the delight of sports fans across the nation. Brackets don’t begin and end with the NCAA tournament, though. Every year around this time, people create brackets for pretty much everything, including coolest name. Here, BTN.com web editor Brent Yarina decided to put together a Big Ten football uniform bracket. Cast your votes in this post.
Playing their first Big Ten tourney game, Doc Sadler and Nebraska busted out new uniforms Thursday night against Purdue. I call the uniforms new, but they look very old; in fact, the numbers almost look like they were ironed on before the game. The “NEBRASKA” font on the front of the jersey is pretty cool, though. No word on whether this is a new uniform, a one-time thing or a sudden alternate uniform. See a picture of the uniforms in this post.
It’s Senior Day in Iowa City, Iowa, and Iowa senior Bryce Cartwright is showing his school pride in a unique way. On his socks. The point guard reached deep into his sock drawer and found a pair of gold Hawkeyes socks. Very cool touch. See the socks in this post.
In early February, people gobbled up our post that spotlighted a designer’s renderings of fake Big Ten helmets. The designer, Charles Sollars, also does uniforms, and he just released a bunch of Michigan designs. I know what you’re thinking: “Why would Michigan ever change uniforms?” It isn’t, and it probably won’t any time soon. These are all for fun and to spark some conversation. See renderings of Sollars’ Michigan uniforms in this post.
You look at this picture, courtesy @BigWeitz, and probably ask yourself, “Why is Fran McCaffery’s autograph on a Michigan State chair?” Fair question. OK, think back about a month ago when McCaffery and the Hawkeyes visited the Spartans. It was a forgettable performance — Iowa lost 95-61 — but few will forget the second-year coach’s intense and passionate display during a timeout. You remember it — McCaffery, fresh off being hit with a technical, gathered his players, yelled some words of encouragement and spiked the chair pictured above to the floor. No wonder the autograph includes “Coach with passion.”
