More alternate uniforms on the horizon for Michigan

While growing up in the 1990s, many of my friends were Michigan and Florida State football fans. Living in Lake Forest, Ill., the Michigan allegiance was understandable — even though none of my friends had ties to the school despite the vast number of Michigan alums residing in Chicago suburbs. But Florida State? Not so much.

Roy Roundtree to wear No. 21 Michigan Legacy Jersey

If you’re looking for Roy Roundtree on the field next season, you won’t find him in his familiar No. 12 jersey. Michigan announced Friday that Roundtree will wear Desmond Howard’s No. 21 “Michigan Football Legend” jersey for the 2012 season. The jersey includes a patch on the upper left chest that honors the Michigan legend and Heisman Trophy winner. See a picture of the patch in this post.

Michigan Hockey Unveils New Look

Michigan unveiled plans for new men’s hockey uniforms for the blue and maize jerseys, and they have a little something old and a little something new. Note that the white jersey will remain unchanged. It’s a move to honor some of the great Michigan teams of the past. As the release notes, “fans will recognize Michigan’s redesigned maize jersey as the same uniform that the Wolverines wore in the “Big Chill at the Big House” outdoor game vs. Michigan State.” See the video from that game in this post to refresh your memory. New Cy-Hawk Series Trophy Selected

Based on the rivalry’s previous hardware, the new Cy-Hawk Series Trophy couldn’t be anything but an improvement. On Tuesday, the new trophy was selected in a landslide vote. And, as expected, it will look a lot better hoisted above players’ heads than its predecessor. The trophy, which received 8,002 of the 10,282 votes (78 percent), features both mascots, corn stalks and a football. The base includes both logos and a list of previous season winners. Purdue gives Motion “P” slight makeover

Purdue isn’t just tinkering with its train logo (see it here), the motion “P” also will sport a slight makeover in the 2012-13 academic year. There will be a gold one, which the school says will serve as the primary logo, and a black one. As was the case with the new train logo, the gold is a lighter shade. Nike tweaks Purdue’s Logo

According to The Exponent, Purdue will have a new logo in the coming months. Like the old one, it still features the train, only with a few tweaks, recommended by Nike. See the logo in this post.

Iowa Unveils Throwback Jerseys

This just in from HawkeyeSports.com: The Iowa football team will wear 1921-22 throwback uniforms when the Hawkeyes host Iowa State on Sept. 8. The helmet is the old gold, with matching gold on the jersey and pants and gray facemasks. The jersey is a black body with an old gold semicircle under arms and white numbers front and back. There will be no player names. The shoes? Black with black laces. The socks? All black as well. There’s a small photo of the jersey at HawkeyeSports.com.

Michigan Wears Maize Shoelaces at Spring Game

The Michigan football team sported maize shoelaces during Saturday’s Spring Game at Michigan Stadium in an effort to support Lace up for Michigan (@LaceUpForUM), a fund-raising effort initiated and run by Wolverine student-athletes with support of the school’s athletic dept. And for those wondering, no, Denard “Shoelace” Robinson didn’t tie the maize strings.

Illinois to don camouflage jerseys May 6

As part of “Honor and Serve Day” on Sunday, May 6, the Illinois baseball team will wear special orange and blue camouflage jerseys in its series finale against Michigan State. The event, according to a FightingIllini.com release, is designed to honor University of Illinois student veterans and all of America’s military heroes, plus to serve the Champaign-Urbana community.
