Wisconsin picked up an overtime win over Michigan in a contest with plenty of late-game drama. Wisconsin and Michigan both found themselves with plenty of fouls to give at the end of regulation on Saturday, but neither team opted to hack to deprive the opponent of a desperation heave. While I believe Wisconsin committed error when it opted not to foul Michigan before Tim Hardaway Jr. knocked down a three-pointer to break a tie with just a few ticks left, I don’ think Michigan did anything wrong by forcing Ben Brust to make a contested 40-foot runner at the buzzer.
That Kentucky-Indiana men’s basketball game in December was pretty memorable, wasn’t it? The guys over at SBNation.com thought it was so great, in fact, the game that forever cemented Christian Watford in Indiana lore claimed the No. 2 spot in the publication’s Top 10 Best College Basketball Games of 2011-12. The only game better than Indiana’s buzzer-beating upset of No. 1 Kentucky at Assembly Hall (AP recap): No. 1 Kentucky’s win over No. 5 North Carolina (AP recap). Another Big Ten team’s game landed on the list, and while Wisconsin’s Sweet 16 defeat to Syracuse (AP recap) didn’t produce a buzzer-beater, […]

Let the anticipation begin at Indiana. With the official announcement this morning that Christian Watford and Cody Zeller were returning to the Hoosiers for next season, Indiana can begin thinking big for 2012-13. How big? The Hoosiers may be the preseason No. 1 team. At the least, Indiana figures to be the heavy favorite to win the Big Ten for the first time since 2001-02, when the Hoosiers also lost in the national title game to Maryland with Mike Davis as the coach. Indiana last won the national championship in 1986-87 under Bobby Knight’s stewardship. The Hoosiers have surpassed all expectations by reaching the Sweet Sixteen for just the second time in 18 years, and they now have a golden opportunity to knock off most people’s national title pick.
Illinois picked up a much needed victory at Northwestern, but they sure didn’t make it easy on themselves. The Wildcats came out executing their offense to the tune of 1.13 points per possession in the first half, a very solid showing against a good Illini defense. John Shurna was at the forefront of the attack, putting up 17 first half points. Northwestern built a double digit lead before a late Illinois run made it closer at the half. In the second half, Illinois’ defense finally showed up. It was an unreal game between two of the nation’s most prestigious programs, and it came down to a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that resulted in a crazy scene in Bloomington, Ind. Now, there’s a video that matches the memorable final 5.6 seconds and ensuing madness to the soundtrack of “Hoosiers.” Watch the video in this post.
No doubt that after the Hoosiers’ dramatic win over top-ranked Kentucky that the talk centers on whether Tom Crean’s rebuilding job of the once-proud program is complete. There are certainly a lot of reasons to think so, even aside from the whole just-beat-the-best-team-in-the-country thing. For one, let’s take a look at the talent on the roster. The core of this team comprises Christian Watford (a one-time top 50 recruit), Victor Oladipo (one of the best freshmen in all of college basketball last season), and McDonald’s All-American Cody Zeller. Each of these players are certainly worthy of major minutes at any […]
