The Wildcats have played in a school-record three straight bowl games, and while they haven’t won a postseason game since 1948, it’s clear Pat Fitzgerald has raised expectations. Northwestern doesn’t hope to make bowl games any more — it expects to be in one. With Dan Persa back from last year’s Achilles’ injury, Northwestern should play a 13th game again. The Wildcats open the season Sept. 3 at Boston College.
Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith attended Purdue practice during our BTN Football Tour this August. Without question, the Boilermakers are ready to put last year behind them. Not only did they finish 4-8, including a season-ending loss to Indiana, but they couldn’t stay healthy. The injuries started early and they affected key guys throughout the fall, resulting in a lost season. Purdue’s luck isn’t getting better, as QB Rob Henry already has torn the ACL in his right knee. The Boilers open the season Sept. 3 against Middle Tennessee St. Watch our Purdue Preview video inside. The Spartans, fresh off a share of their first Big Ten title since 1990, are eying the program’s first back-to-back 10-win seasons. It’s a realistic goal, considering Michigan State returns QB Kirk Cousins and, arguably, the Big Ten’s best set of skill players. Lineman Jerel Worthy and a big-play secondary give Michigan State a formidable defense. The Spartans open the season Sept. 2 against Youngstown State. The legendary Joe Paterno is back for another season, his 45th at the helm of Penn State. The Nittany Lions are out to make up for last season’s disappointing 7-6 campaign. To do so, the defense must improve. The usually reliable unit allowed 23.7 points per game last year. Penn State also has to decide on a quarterback. Is it Rob Bolden or Matt McGloin?
