Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith visited Northwestern practice during the BTN Football Tour in August. The Wildcats have played in a school-record three straight bowl games, and while they haven’t won a postseason game since 1948, it’s clear Pat Fitzgerald has raised expectations. Northwestern doesn’t hope to make bowl games any more — it expects to be in one. With Dan Persa back from last year’s Achilles’ injury, Northwestern should play a 13th game again. The Wildcats open the season Sept. 3 at Boston College. Watch our Northwestern Preview video inside.
Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith attended Purdue practice during our BTN Football Tour this August. Without question, the Boilermakers are ready to put last year behind them. Not only did they finish 4-8, including a season-ending loss to Indiana, but they couldn’t stay healthy. The injuries started early and they affected key guys throughout the fall, resulting in a lost season. Purdue’s luck isn’t getting better, as QB Rob Henry already has torn the ACL in his right knee. The Boilers open the season Sept. 3 against Middle Tennessee St. Watch our Purdue Preview video inside.
Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith visited Michigan State practice on our BTN Football Tour this August. The Spartans, fresh off a share of their first Big Ten title since 1990, are eying the program’s first back-to-back 10-win seasons. It’s a realistic goal, considering Michigan State returns QB Kirk Cousins and, arguably, the Big Ten’s best set of skill players. Lineman Jerel Worthy and a big-play secondary give Michigan State a formidable defense. The Spartans open the season Sept. 2 against Youngstown State. Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith visited Michigan practice during our BTN Football Tour this August. After three unsuccessful seasons under Rich Rodriguez, who went 15-22, the Wolverines hired Brady Hoke, a Michigan man. Hoke turned around San Diego State and Ball State at his last two stops, and that’s what he hopes to do at Michigan. The Wolverines will switch to a pro-style offense, but the coaches swear they won’t stifle Denard Robinson. Michigan opens the season Sept. 3 against Western Michigan. Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith visited Penn State practice on our BTN Football Tour this August. The legendary Joe Paterno is back for another season, his 45th at the helm of Penn State. The Nittany Lions are out to make up for last season’s disappointing 7-6 campaign. To do so, the defense must improve. The usually reliable unit allowed 23.7 points per game last year. Penn State also has to decide on a quarterback. Is it Rob Bolden or Matt McGloin? Penn State opens the season Sept. 3 against Indiana State. Watch all of our Penn State Preview video inside.
Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith visited Ohio State practice during our BTN Football Tour in August. It’s been an eventful offseason in Columbus, to say the least. Jim Tressel is out following an NCAA investigation, and Luke Fickell is in. The Buckeyes also are without Terrelle Pryor, who opted to enter the NFL supplemental draft. It’s no secret Ohio State has distractions standing in its way, but it is a program that reloads and overcomes adversity. The Buckeyes open the season Sept. 3 against Akron. Watch all our Ohio State Preview video inside.
Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith visited Indiana practice during our BTN Football Tour this August. The Hoosiers are under the direction of first-time head coach Kevin Wilson, the former offensive coordinator at Oklahoma. Wilson replaces Bill Lynch, who led Indiana to its first bowl game since 1993 in his first year but only went 19-30 in four seasons. Indiana must replace QB Ben Chappell, although its biggest issue is defense, where it allowed 39.5 ppg in Big Ten play last year. The Hoosiers open the season Sept. 3 vs. Ball State. Watch our Indiana Preview video inside.
Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith visited Illinois practice during the BTN Football Tour in August. The Illini are fresh off a 7-6 season that saw them finish with a bang, destroying Baylor, 38-14, in the Texas Bowl. Ron Zook’s team lost a lot of talent, from Mikel Leshoure to Corey Liuget, but it returns enough proven players to have fans expecting more. It all starts with QB Nathan Scheelhaase, who looks bigger and stronger and hopes to build on a terrific end to his freshman season. The Illini open the season Sept. 3 against Arkansas State. Watch all of our Illinois Preview video inside.
Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith visited Nebraska practice on our BTN Football Tour in August. The Huskers, of course, enter their first season in the Big Ten this fall. Led by an experienced and talented defense, Bo Pelini’s team will be an immediate force. With the return of Jared Crick, Lavonte David and Alfonzo Dennard, among others, Nebraska’s D could prove to be the Big Ten’s elite unit. And its offense isn’t too bad, either, led by dynamic QB Taylor Martinez. The Huskers open the season Sept. 3 vs. UT-Chattanooga. Watch all of our Nebraska Preview video inside.
Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith took in Minnesota practice during our BTN Football Tour in August. The Gophers open a new chapter in their program, with former Northern Illinois head coach Jerry Kill taking over for Tim Brewster. It’s no secret that Minnesota struggled under Brewster, compiling a 15-30 record in his four seasons, but now it’s Kill’s turn to try to turn the program around. Minnesota opens the season Sept. 3 at USC. See all of our Minnesota Preview video inside.
Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith caught up with Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz during our BTN Football Tour in August. The Hawkeyes went 8-5 last season, a disappointing campaign that opened with national championship aspirations. Expectations aren’t as high this season in Iowa City, and that’s usually a good thing. When Iowa isn’t expected to do much, that’s when it flies under the radar and seems to have some of its best seasons. The Hawkeyes open the season Sept. 3 against Tennessee Tech. Watch all of our Iowa Preview Show video inside.
Dave Revsine, Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith caught up with Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema on our BTN Football Tour in August. The Badgers, fresh off a shared Big Ten championship and a Rose Bowl berth, expect great things again this fall. While Wisconsin lost a lot of talent, from J.J. Watt to Gabe Carimi, among others, it returns more than its share of stars on both sides of the ball, including North Carolina State transfer Russell Wilson. The Badgers open the season Sept. 1 against UNLV. Watch more Wisconsin Tour videos inside.
