Next time you watch a game, keep an eye on the sidelines. Watch the coaches jaw with the referees, calling them over and talking to them about a call or non-call. In the coaching biz, it’s called “working the officials,” and the Big Ten has some coaches who are masters at it. As part of my ongoing series of casual Big Ten Surveys, I asked seven writers who cover the Big Ten which coaches they feel work the officials the best. Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan was the selection of five writers. Michigan State’s Tom Izzo and Indiana’s Tom Crean were the […]

Make it 11 consecutive victories for Wisconsin over Michigan at the Kohl Center. It’s safe to say, Saturday’s triumph is the best of the bunch. Not only did the contest go to overtime, thanks to Ben Brust’s ridiculous buzzer-beater in regulation, it ended in an upset of the third-ranked Wolverines. Naturally, a win of this caliber calls for a crazy celebration. The Badgers did their share of celebrating following the final buzzer (see photos here), but the fun also continued in the locker room. And, lucky for us, there’s footage of it. Wisconsin posted the video below on its YouTube […]

Tom Crean and Bo Ryan have long been bitter rivals. The rivalry goes back to Crean’s Marquette days, when the two coaches faced off once a season. Nowadays, they typically play twice a year. And since Crean came to Indiana, in 2008, Ryan has owned the rivalry, to the tune of a 9-0 record. The latest win came in Tuesday’s upset at Assembly Hall, and neither coach seemed overly excited about greeting the other in the postgame handshake line. Watch the ultra-quick handshake now.
Let’s get two things out of the way here first: 1.) Bo Ryan gives pretty entertaining postgame interviews, ones often peppered with a joke or two; and 2.) BTN analyst Tim Doyle’s Northwestern career was a lot better than most remember. OK, now that that’s out of the way, it’s time to get to Ryan’s postgame interview with Doyle following Sunday’s 47-41 victory at Nebraska. As the score indicates, the game wasn’t exactly a thing of beauty. And when Doyle mentioned it wasn’t “pretty” and asked Ryan what he said to Nebraska coach Tim Miles in the handshake line, the […]

Wisconsin basketball coach Bo Ryan was being swallowed up in a firestorm of criticism surrounding the restrictions he and the school have since lifted on the transfer of redshirt freshman Jarrod Uthoff. But was it all warranted? If you look closely at what it was Ryan was asking for, it was merely an explanation as to why he wanted to transfer. At the time, neither Ryan nor anyone at Wisconsin had talked to Uthoff about why the former Iowa Mr. Basketball wanted to transfer, aside from the fact he said he didn’t fit Ryan’s system. Both of the conference’s sports boast a who’s who of the modern day coaching world. From Tom Izzo to Joe Paterno, the names are legendary and iconic. But what about when you consider the nation’s best football and men’s basketball coaching duos? The Big Ten is deep there, too. Rivals.com considered the topic Sunday, and all four writers mentioned Big Ten duos in their answers. Read the article here.
