The Big Ten has said that it wants schools to beef up their non-conference schedules. Well, so far, so good. Michigan is the latest school to add a marquee non-conference foe. Today, the school announced a home-and-home series with Virginia Tech in 2020 and 2021. The schools have met just one time, with the Wolverines beating the Hokies, 23-20, in the Sugar Bowl after the 2011 season. LSU and Wisconsin reportedly are in discussions for a series and so are Penn State and Miami (Fla.). Here are some other future marquee non-conference Big Ten games announced since March.
It’s time to talk the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The event might be six-plus months away, but the 2013 matchups were released Wednesday afternoon. This year’s event is Dec. 3-4, with six games each night, and it features first-year ACC members Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. That last part, the addition of the three perennial Big East contenders, makes this event even more intriguing and, most importantly, daunting for the Big Ten. Not only does the ACC gain those three teams, but with 15 teams total, it gets to keep last year’s three-worst teams out of the event.
Strength of schedule figures to be a big component of the criteria used to determine who will play in the coming four-team playoff in 2014. To that end, Wisconsin’s 2015 slate will get a big boost from having a game with Alabama on its slate. The school announced Wednesday that it will play the two-time defending national champion Crimson Tide on Sept. 5, 2015, in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Alabama beat Michigan in the same venue to open the 2012 season. By 2015, Big Ten schools may be playing nine league games, making this a rugged slate for Wisconsin.
