Indiana at Ohio State - Baseball Highlights

Fresh off its first outright Big Ten title since 1932, Indiana will be the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten baseball tournament Wednesday-Saturday (Sunday, if necessary) at Target Field. The Hoosiers, along with Ohio State, earned a first-round bye in the six-team, double-elimination tourney that opens at 1:05 p.m. ET Wednesday. All 10 games will air live on BTN/BTN2Go.

Following the completion of the 2012 Big Ten Baseball Tournament on Saturday night, the Big Ten office released the all-tournament team. Purdue won the school’s first Big Ten tourney, thanks to an exciting 6-5 victory over heated rival Indiana, and it had five players earn honors, headlined by Most Outstanding Player Kevin Plawecki. Purdue vs. Indiana - 2012 Big Ten Tournament Baseball Highlights

Andrew Dixon scored the tie-breaking run on a wild play in the ninth inning and Nick Wittgren closed the game out with a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame, as No. 15 Purdue baseball won its first Big Ten Tournament title with a 6-5 win against Indiana on Saturday evening at Huntington Park. With the win, the Boilermakers earned the Big Ten’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Purdue, which also won the Big Ten regular-season title, went 3-0 en route to claiming the tournament crown. Two of the wins came against Indiana, which it beat 3-0 on Friday night.

On a wild play in the top of the ninth inning of Saturday night’s 2012 Big Ten Baseball Tournament championship game, Purdue took the lead and tempers flared at the conclusion of the play. Both benches cleared and the teams had to be separated. Watch the crazy play that saw the eventual game-winning run score and led to the scuffle now. With the 6-5 win (recap), Purdue claimed its first Big Ten tourney title and earned the Big Ten’s automatic berth to the NCAA tournament.

No. 2 Indiana outlasted No. 5 Michigan State, 4-3, in 11 innings Saturday afternoon to advance to the 2012 Big Ten Baseball Tournament championship at Huntington Park. The Hoosiers eventually lost to heated rival and No. 1 Purdue, 6-5, in the title game. Michael Basil provided the game-winning RBI to lift Indiana past Michigan State in the 11th and Ryan Halstead retired the Spartans in order to pick up the win.

Indiana’s Micah Johnson knows how to flash the leather. The second baseman can get creative with the glove, too, evidenced by his highlight-reel play Saturday against Michigan State. On a soft grounder by Anthony Cheky, Johnson charged the ball, fielded it, and with his momentum taking him toward home plate, decided to flip the ball out his glove to first base. It’s never easy directing the ball out of the glove, but Johnson got it done. Watch the play now.

Indiana trailed Purdue 3-0 heading into the ninth on Friday night in the Big Ten Baseball Tournament, which meant it was time for the Hoosiers to follow baseball tradition and don the rally caps. That usually means players on the team that trails turn their hats inside out or turn them brim up so that they resemble a shark fin. But this Hoosier took it upon himself to not only wear multiple caps but also a snappy pair of glasses. It didn’t help this time as Indiana fell 3-0 to Purdue, but the Hoosiers get another chance to play Saturday.

Needing a win to stay alive in the Big Ten Tournament, the Michigan State baseball team defeated Ohio State, 6-2, Friday afternoon in an elimination game at Huntington Park. The Spartans (37-20) will now play on Saturday at 3:35 p.m. against the loser of the Purdue-Indiana game, which is being played Friday night.

Indiana opened the Big Ten Tournament in thrilling fashion, plating four runs in the bottom of the eighth to turn a two-run deficit into a two-run lead as the Hoosiers completed a 6-4 come-from-behind victory over Michigan State. Michael Basil’s two-run double to deep right center lifted IU past the Buckeyes in the bottom of the eighth. A gutty performance from starter Joey DeNato, multiple clutch hits and a roller-coaster final frame from Jonny Hoffman combined to secure Indiana’s triumph.

Penn State vs. Nebraska - 2012 Big Ten Baseball Tournament Highlights

Penn State dropped its second game of the Big Ten Tournament to the Nebraska Cornhuskers by a score of 12-3 on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Nittany Lions are eliminated from the tournament. Penn State finishes the season 29-27 overall, the program’s second-straight winning season. Senior Sean Deegan led the game off with a home run, his Big Ten leading 12th of the season. After that, it was all Cornhuskers, collecting 18 hits in the victory.

No. 6 Ohio State plated nine runs in the final two innings to defeat No. 3 Penn State, 12-5, on the opening day of the Big Ten tournament Wednesday at Huntington Park. The Buckeyes, who move to 32-25 on the season, take on top-seeded and 18th-ranked Purdue at 7:05 p.m. ET Thursday. David Corna and Patrick Porter both drove in four runs, while Corna and Brad Holberg each had three hits. Brett McKinney threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory. Senior co-captain Tony Bucciferro allowed just two runs and struck out five in eight innings to lead the Michigan State baseball team past Nebraska, 10-9, in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Huntington Park. Michigan State (36-19) collected 17 hits and appeared to have the game in hand with a 10-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning, but Nebraska (34-22) rallied for seven runs in its final at-bat. Michigan State had already allowed seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning in the opening game of the 2012 Big Ten Baseball Tournament on Wednesday, and with the tying run on third base, second basemen Ryan Jones bailed out the Spartans. On what looked like the game-tying hit, Jones climbed the ladder and robbed his counterpart, Nebraska second baseman Pat Kelly, of an RBI hit. The terrific catch sealed Michigan State’s 10-9 victory and put it into the winner’s bracket. The Spartans entered the inning leading 10-2. Watch the play now.
