It’s official: Adreian Payne is returning to Michigan State for his senior year, stamping the Spartans as the Big Ten favorite and top national title contender next season. Payne struggled with the decision, waiting until the final day (April 28) to render a choice. He was projected by many to be a first-round draft choice. Payne will return to a roster that welcomes back all of its key components, save for departed senior big man Derrick Nix. Payne’s return is welcome news for a Big Ten that has seen a big talent drain, with Indiana’s Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller, […]

As we still await Adreian Payne’s NBA draft decision, I thought it would be fun to take another way-too-early look ahead to the 2013-14 season. This time, I’ll do it in prediction form, offering five things I’m confident about in 2013-14. See all five in this post. Have a prediction of your own? Feel free to leave it as a comment. 1. Ronnie Johnson, not Yogi Ferrell, will be best point guard in Indiana – No disrespect to Ferrell, whose role is certain to increase in the wake of Indiana losing Jordan Hulls, Victor Oladipo, Christian Watford and Cody Zeller.
NBA Hall of Famer Reggie Miller once scored eight points in 11 seconds. The Spartans had a quick – albeit less memorable – outburst of their own in Sunday’s defeat at Indiana. In a span of 3.7 seconds, Adreian Payne slammed home Travis Trice‘s miss and Branden Dawson, after stealing the ensuing inbound pass, dunked again. Yes, that’s two dunks in less than four seconds. Some teams don’t get two dunks in an entire game! Watch the sequence now. [ RELATED: Looking for a particular jam?
On Saturday, Iowa defended its home court with a win over Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes raced out to a 30-10 lead before the Badgers finally got something going on offense, though I think that early start for Wisconsin overshadows what kind of game this really was. Both offenses scored over a point per possession, which is a good sign for this Iowa offense that had been struggling somewhat in conference play. Most of the problem can be traced to some awful outside shooting as Iowa has struggled to replace the shooting acumen of Matt Gatens. And Saturday was no different, as […]

This may surprise you, but every now and then we say something that really gets fans riled up. The best example of this is our belief that while Aaron Craft is a very good defender, he is not, nor has he ever been, Ohio State’s best defender. And this year, he’s not even the team’s best perimeter defender. Rather than take this as a complement to Ohio State’s collection of outstanding defenders, a lot of people take this as a slight to Craft. Well, today I want to say all sorts of things that I think are true, but I […]

Entering the season, we heard a lot about how Michigan State big man Adreian Payne had extended his range. That may be true, but Payne spends most of his time down low, and for good reason. In Sunday’s 69-41 victory over Texas Southern, the 6-foot-10 junior threw down two highlight-reel dunks. Watch his alley-oop on the inbound pass now and see his athletic and powerful putback of a missed 3-pointer in this post. Watch Payne’s impressive, powerful putback: There were plenty of other highlight-reel dunks for Michigan State win, and you can watch all of them here.
