The 2011-12 All-Big Ten Women’s Basketball Teams were announced live on BTN on Monday night. Ohio State’s Samantha Prahalis, Minnesota’s Rachel Banham and Penn State’s Coquese Washington were named player of the year, freshman of the year and coach of the year, respectively, by both the coaches and media. The Big Ten Conference announced the bracket on Sunday for the 2012 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament, with conference champion Penn State earning the No. 1 seed and one of four first-round byes. The tournament is set for Thursday-Sunday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, previously known as Conseco Fieldhouse. BTN and BTN2Go will air the tournament’s first 10 games, starting with No. 7 Michigan-No. 10 Illinois at 11:30 a.m. ET Thursday. The championship game will be played at 4 p.m. ET Sunday.
It was a busy Sunday of Big Ten women’s basketball, as all 12 teams were in action on the season’s final day. No. 15 Penn State routed Minnesota to claim the outright Big Ten title, No. 23 Nebraska took down No. 14 Ohio State in a battle of ranked teams and Purdue blasted archrival Indiana. On Thursday night Ohio State’s Samantha Prahalis had a game for the ages as the Buckeyes senior guard scored a school-record 42 points in her last home game and Ohio State beat Minnesota 81-56. She finished with six rebounds, four assists and three steals before leaving to a standing ovation with 2:27 left after breaking Katie Smith’s 1994 record by hitting two free throws.
A handful of Big Ten women’s basketball games on Thursday night including Purdue at Michigan.
