No. 7 Ohio State sweeps No. 5 Maryland, takes over first place

(AP) Ohio State made its case a changing of the guard could take place in Big Ten women’s basketball this season as the seventh-ranked Buckeyes beat No. 5 Maryland 94-86 on Monday night. Fittingly, Ohio State guards Kelsey Mitchell and Ameryst Alston led the way. Mitchell had 33 points and Alston scored 22 for the Buckeyes (19-4, 11-1), who never trailed and took sole possession of the top spot in the Big Ten standings from the defending champion Terrapins (21-3, 10-2). “Obviously Ohio State was terrific tonight,” Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. “They came out ready to play from the

Shelley Till: Taking a look at hot and cold teams in Big Ten

As we approach the end of January, it may be cold outside, but a few Big Ten teams are heating up! This week we take a look at who’s hot, and who’s not? Who’s hot? Two teams are currently on five-game winning streaks: Maryland and Nebraska. The Terrapins’ offense is currently ranked fourth in the NCAA and, over their current streak, they’ve revved up on both ends of the floor with a commanding +21.8 average margin of victory. Their only hiccup thus far in Big Ten play was vs. the third-ranked offense in the country, the Ohio State Buckeyes. However,

Shelley Till: Big Ten freshmen making a name for themselves

Some refer to her as inexperienced, underrated, wet behind the ears, or the new kid on the block. One would expect that the rookie would need extra time to adjust to the high level of the Big Ten. She would need to gain experience before she makes her mark vs. the usual suspects. Well, not so for these young ladies! Here is a look at the current top rookies who are already making a name for themselves in the Big Ten. Jessica Shepard, Nebraska. This 6-4 center is at the top of her freshman class. She’s averaging a double-double, scoring

Shelley Till: The Kelsey Mitchell Book of Excellence

Ohio State sophomore sensation Kelsey Mitchell has just earned her second national and Big Ten Player of the Week awards of the season. It’s an acknowledgement she didn’t even realize she’d received when I spoke with her. If I had to summarize Kelsey in one word, it would be humble. She is a person who cares greatly about her family and friends, is willing to sacrifice for the betterment of her team, and has one pretty incredible role model to emulate. Mitchell partially credits the early success of her team to its strong non-conference schedule, one in which she learned
