For a remarkable fifth time in the last six years, the Penn State women’s volleyball team has advanced to the national semifinals. The Nittany Lions dropped Big Ten rival Minnesota, 3-1, in the regional finals Saturday night. Nebraska wasn’t as lucky, though, as it lost its regional final to Oregon, 3-1. Michigan plays Stanford later tonight.
Six Big Ten women’s volleyball teams advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament and all six played Friday night. Both Penn State and Nebraska swept their opponents to advance to Saturday’s round while Minnesota and Michigan moved on by defeating Big Ten foes Purdue and Michigan State , respectively.

The Big Ten will be well-represented at the 2012 NCAA Volleyball Championship, as seven conference teams were selected to the tournament’s field of 64. The seven squads is tied for first among all conferences and marks the third time in the last four years that the Big Ten has sent seven or more teams to the national tournament.
