The Big Ten men’s soccer season is right around the corner, but the teams have one last weekend of non-conference games to shape their squad and prepare for the grind that has come to characterize Big Ten soccer. This upcoming weekend, the seven schools that represent the conference have matches that may not count toward the Big Ten standings (see standings at BigTen.org), but they will be important come NCAA tournament time.
What a difference a season makes. This time last year it all seemed so clear – Michigan and Indiana were to battle it out for Big Ten honors. The Wolverines looked fresh from a memorable journey to the College Cup, where they lost out to eventual winners Akron in the final four. The Hoosiers had that calm, composed, yet confident feel to their program preseason.
Michigan used season-highs of four goals and 20 shots to overpower previously undefeated Northeastern, 4-1, on Sunday at U-M Soccer Stadium. Senior Kofi Opare scored twice in the match, while junior Fabio Pereira had a goal and a pair of assists in the victory. Tiffany Cameron’s goal 24 seconds into overtime gave the Ohio State women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory over No. 13 Missouri Thursday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Big Ten announced its 2012 men’s soccer Preseason Coaches’ Poll and Players to Watch List on Tuesday, with the conference’s last two regular-season champs tied at the top. Northwestern, fresh off its first Big Ten title, and 2012 champ Indiana were picked as the conference favorites.

The Indiana men’s soccer team is the lone Big Ten team that remains in the men’s or women’s NCAA Soccer Tournament.
