The second day of the 2012 Big Ten Men’s Gymnastics Championships saw individual event winners crowned and All-Conference teams and award winners announced on Saturday night. Four schools won event titles, including two each for both Illinois and Michigan. Paul Ruggeri won both individual event championships for the Illini, while Sam Mikulak took home two titles for the Wolverines.

Iowa hosted the 2012 Big Ten Men’s Gymnastics Championships Friday which featured the team and all-around competitions. Illinois won their fourth straight Big Ten title and freshman CJ Maestas took home the all-around crown in Friday’s session. In last year’s tri-meet against Iowa and Nebraska, the Gophers finished third out of the three competitors. But this season they did not let history repeat itself. It wasn’t Minnesota’s strongest meet. They struggled with the last three events, allowing Nebraska and Iowa to close the scoring gap. But the No. 6 Gophers pulled through and won the meet with a total score of 340.0. The 11th-ranked Cornhuskers finished in second with a 336.5, and No. 12 Iowa came in third at 334.5. Michigan State’s Kathryn Mahoney suffered a life-altering injury doing what she loved most: competing in gymnastics. One moment, she’s honing her craft on the vault, and the next she’s motionless. Mahoney fractured her C6 vertebra one day in practice, leaving her paralyzed and wheelchair-bound. Ever since the incident, Mahoney has received support in all walks of life. “It’s been incredible,” Mahoney said, “I can’t even thank all of the people who have been supporting me.” Watch her inspiring story.

Michigan’s run of dominance at the Big Ten Women’s Gymnastics Championships was in serious doubt until the very end of the 2011 meet in Minneapolis. The Wolverines (196.600), however, finished strong on the beam and floor to edge out Penn State (196.375) and Illinois (196.075) en route to claiming their fifth straight Big Ten crown. The fact the victory was so close and that it came down down to the very end made it all the more rewarding, Michigan coach Bev Plocki said: “That makes it that much sweeter, because they did it under pressure.”
