Gary Andersen

UW's Andersen plans to hit the ground running

Gary Andersen sounded like a confident and prepared coach. Soon, he’ll get the chance to prove it, as he was introduced today as the new Wisconsin coach. “This is an exciting day for the Badger football program,” said Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez. “I believe we did our due diligence and have the right fit.” And with that, the Andersen era has begun following the shocking departure of Bret Bielema to Arkansas on Dec. 4, just days after leading the Badgers to a 70-31 win over Nebraska in the Big Ten title game. Nebraska vs Wisconsin

Season in review: Wisconsin football

Wisconsin isn’t apologizing for being the first five-loss team ever in the Rose Bowl. The Badgers will proudly punch their third ticket in a row to Pasadena, thanks largely to a defense that played well all season. This team’s grit in the face of adversity also is admirably, as the offensive line coach was canned two games into the season; three quarterbacks have started games; and now, head coach Bret Bielema has bolted. Dienhart: Let's rank the Big Ten bowls

It’s the holiday season. Time is precious. There are many options when it comes to Big Ten bowl games but there are also five of them on Jan. 1 alone. Which ones should you watch? What should you watch for in each? That’s where I come in with my nifty ranking of the Big Ten bowls from 1-7. So, sit back, put down the remote, pick up your eggnog and candy cane and read on. Mailbag: How about no divisions for football?

It’s the busy holiday season, but that hasn’t stopped your flow of questions! Thanks! There is a lot going on in the Big Ten as we come to the end of 2012, with the bowl season starting, basketball picking up steam, Wisconsin hiring a coach and talk of Big Ten divisional realignment percolating. I look at all of that in my mail bag. Congrats to Badger fans on the pending hiring of Utah State’s Gary Andersen. It is a great hire. Andersen is a great coach, getting the best out of his teams and talent. He took a dead USU

Bill O'Brien

Penn State's Bill O'Brien wins Maxwell COY honor

The Maxwell Club, the oldest football club in America, announced Wednesday that Penn State’s Bill O’Brien has been selected as its Coach of the Year for the 2012 season. O’Brien led the Nittany Lions to victories in eight of their final 10 games, earning an 8-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the Big Ten, with the only losses coming to division winners Ohio State and Nebraska. In its final game, Penn State beat eventual Big Ten Champion Wisconsin, 24-21, in overtime. O’Brien’s eight wins are the most by a first-year Penn State coach in the 126 years of

Gary Andersen

Wisconsin to hire Utah State's Gary Andersen

Wisconsin will hire Utah State’s Gary Andersen as its next coach, the Big Ten Network confirmed Tuesday night. The Wisconsin State Journal first reported the news. Badger fans may be familiar with Andersen, whose team lost at Wisconsin on Sept. 15 this season, 16-14, only after missing a 37-yard field goal in the dying seconds to allow Wisconsin to escape. Unlike the departed Bret Bielema who needed to be groomed for the job, Andersen brings a strong background as a head coach to Wisconsin. But like Bielema–and Wisconsin A.D. Barry Alvarez–Andersen brings a defensive background to the job. Andersen, 48,

Rose Bowl

Which Big Ten team needs bowl win the most?

Seven Big Ten teams are playing in bowl games, beginning with Minnesota vs. Texas Tech in the Meineke Car Care Bowl on Dec. 28 and ending with Wisconsin vs. Stanford in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. Which Big Ten team needs to win their bowl game the most? BTN’s Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith have two different choices, and host Dave Revsine chimes in with a third possibility. Vote your choice in this post. When asked for one team, DiNardo listed three: Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Nebraska. Pressed to choose one, he takes Wisconsin, but DiNardo added, “Those other two are

NCAA Football: Michigan at Purdue

Season in review: Purdue football

Purdue is going to a bowl for a second consecutive season but the Boilermakers had to finish with a flurry to get there. More was expected from Danny Hope’s fourth team, and that’s why he was fired and Darrell Hazell was hired from Kent State. The offense struggled much of the season and lacked an identity and consistency. But a defense with several legit NFL prospects was the biggest disappointment, ranking No. 11 overall in the Big Ten (407.3 ypg) and 10th in scoring defense (29.0 ppg).
