Who are Big Ten's biggest home-run hitters?

The 2013 MLB Home Run Derby is tonight, so I thought it would be fun to consider the Big Ten’s best home-run hitters. On the gridiron, that is. Who’s in the running? A quarterback tops my list, which can be seen in this post. 1. Braxton Miller, Ohio State – There are some players who can take it to the house every time hand meets pigskin, and Miller – he of TD runs of 37, 55, 65 and 67 yards last year – is the Big Ten’s most electrifying longball threat. 2. Taylor Martinez, Nebraska – Martinez doesn’t get the

Bill Carollo: 'We have to change behavior'

Big Ten officials coordinator Bill Carollo didn’t hesitate when I asked him what the point of emphasis was going to be for officials this fall: blows targeted above the shoulders at defenseless players. “If it happens,” Carollo said, “the player will be automatically ejected from the game.” And if officials have any doubt if a hit violated the guidelines, they have been told: “When it doubt, throw him out.” Does that seem harsh? Last year, such an infraction resulted in a 15-yard penalty. But, these are new, evolving times. And player safety is the No. 1 goal of the Big

Big Ten's best football traditions? Here's a fun list

The Big Ten is as steep in tradition as any of the nation’s conferences. Considering that, it’s a dubious task to try to rank the top traditions. Athlon Sports was bold enough to give it a stab, and like many people, it thinks Ohio State’s dotting the “I” is the cream of the crop. See the publication’s list in this post. [ AthlonSports.com: Ranking the Big Ten’s best historic traditions ] Here’s what Athlon said about the Ohio Stadium staple: “The culmination of “Script Ohio” during the pre-game festivities at Ohio State is a sight to behold. Big Ten releases 2016 & 2017 conference slates

Back in April, the Big Ten announced it was going to implement a nine-game conference schedule, starting in 2016. Thursday, it unveiled the first such schedule—along with the 2017 Big Ten league slate. [ RELATED: 2016 conference slate (PDF) | 2017 conference slate (PDF) ] One thing fans will notice in the 2016 and 2017 schedules is conference games being played earlier in the season. Previously, league games typically didn’t begin until October—depending on calendar quirks. But the extra league contest has pushed Big Ten action forward in the calendar, as schools will drop from four to three non-conference games

Who wins Leaders vs. Legends All-Star Game?

With the 2013 MLB All-Star Game less than a week away, I recently got to thinking about a Big Ten football all-star game. You know, a game that pits the Leaders Division’s best vs. the Legends Division’s best. Who would be on the teams, and who would win? See both teams, which were constructed using Phil Steele’s 2013 preseason teams, in this post. Twitter: Urschel 'honored' to speak at Kickoff Luncheon

Penn State offensive lineman John Urschel has the honor – not to mention stress – of speaking on behalf of the players at the Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon on July 25 in Chicago. Urschel tweeted that he’s “honored” to represent the 36 Big Ten players who will be in attendance at the Hilton Chicago. [ RELATED: View the complete list of players who will attend Big Ten media days ] Urschel, who also represented Penn State at last year’s media days, knows he has his work cut out for him. 2013 B1G writers' football uniform power rankings

What’s better than your typical Big Ten football uniform power ranking? A uniform ranking decided by 12 Big Ten writers, that’s what. BTN.com recently asked a writer for every school to rank the conference’s uniforms, from 1-12. We asked the writers to consider the uniforms as a whole, factoring in home, away, alternate(s) and helmet(s). Editor’s note: The final ranking was determined using point totals (12 points for No. 1 ranking; 1 point for No. 12 ranking; etc.) and it is listed in order, from most points to fewest points.
