What would it be like to move to a new country, play one year of high school football, and then go on to become one of the greatest placekickers in NFL history? That’s exactly what happened with former Michigan State All-American kicker Morten Andersen. I recently spoke with Andersen and asked him to share some of his best, untold stories during his playing days at Michigan State. Andersen enjoyed a standout collegiate career as the Spartans’ starting kicker from 1978 to 1981. He was a consensus All-American during his senior season and still holds the record for the longest field-goal […]

First-year Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen has a schedule that’s built for success. The Badgers should start no worse than 3-1—maybe even 4-0—as they head to Ohio State on Sept. 28. After visiting the Horseshoe, the Badgers don’t have a lot of heavy lifting. In fact, a talented and veteran Wisconsin squad should be favored in every remaining game in its quest for a fourth Rose Bowl berth in a row. Fire up the grill and cue the polka music. Toughest non-conference game: There is a visit from BYU on Nov. 9. But the trip to Arizona State on Sept. 14 […]

Now, he gets a chance to add to that tradition by pushing the buttons on the Boilermakers’ attack under first-year coach Darrell Hazell. Shoop, 43, brings a strong background to West Lafayette. He began his career as a volunteer at Dartmouth in 1991 and then became a G.A. at Vanderbilt from 1992-94. Shoop then moved on to the NFL, where he was a quality control coach for the Carolina Panthers in 1995 and eventually became quarterbacks coach. All the while, quarterback play came under scrutiny. Michigan State quarterbacks coach Brad Salem says the competition between Andrew Maxwell and Connor Cook is “pretty even.” Maxwell exited spring drills as the No. 1 guy. But, fans recall he was benched during the game-winning drive of the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl last season in favor of Cook. Don’t discount incoming freshman Damion Terry making an impact. There is no more challenging non-conference schedule in the conference, with a trip to Big East co-champ Cincinnati and home games vs. Notre Dame (BCS title game) and Northern Illinois (Orange Bowl). Getting one Big Ten road victory may be a difficult proposition, too. Bottom line: A 1-6 start isn’t out of the question. The back end of the schedule is a bit kinder.
